Not sure if is us or if it's common, but our 8 hour tour was over in 4. Knowledgeable tour guide, interesting sights. For anybody else doing the same thing, spend a lot of time in the venues, or choose some extra places to go.
Guide Lakuma driver Rudhiran were absolutely wonderful!
MUST DO this all-in tour of Chennai.
To make it a 5-star experience:
1 Avoid morning delay by telling hotel reception where you're waiting
2 As religious sites are visited before lunch, be sure to demand you see ALL included temples churches in the first half of the tour. In other words, insist on seeing St. Mary's Church in the Madras Fort before the buffet break. If you don't, you will either run out of time--or energy--later in the day.
3 Don't add on extra sites of worship until you are done with Kapaleeshwar Temple, Parthasarathy Temple, San Thome Church, AND St. Mary's Church Madras Fort. If you have leftover time before lunch, consider visiting the Ramakrishna Mutt after which R.K. Mutt Road is named and the Sheerdi Sai temple in Mylapore.
4 After lunch, when you go to the Government Museum, check out some extra precious gems of culture and history housed at other facilities on the campus. This will keep you out of the hot sun and in the AC for most of the sweltering afternoon. It will also leave you with enough energy to walk all the way over to the seashore and dip your feet in the water at Marina Beach after 4pm.
5 Finally, manage the expectations game by reminding yourself that this is India, where the sidewalks will not be clean or evenly paved if they actually exist, where the street traffic vehicles, people, animals will be disorderly, and where unsanitary odors will be plentiful bring a scented handerkerchief to cover your nose.
ENJOY THE TOUR!
