Your meal for the evening will be served in ‘Khan’ (small bowls) at a ‘Toke’ (low table), a tradition that dates back to the 1950s when a local politician began to invite special guests to these Northern Thai-style gatherings. The food for the evening will celebrate Chiang Mai’s distinctive cuisine, which combines an array of noodles, chiles, rice, and curries, each of which was introduced to the region by neighboring countries like Myanmar, Laos, and China.

As you eat, you’ll also enjoy a series of Thai-style dance performances. Admire graceful rituals like the Forn Thien candle dance, Ramwong circle dance, the Ram Dab sword dance, and the Forn Leb finger dance. An optional upgrade that offers a second performance by some of Chiang Mai’s local hill tribes like Karen, Lao, Meo, Lisu, and more is also available. At the conclusion of the experience you’ll receive a drop-off at your Chiang Mai hotel.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Old Chiangmai Cultural Center
It is a short ride from your hotel to the venue where you will be welcomed by the staff who will guide you to your table where your Khantoke dinner is served. Dinner is served in small bowls, known in Thai as Khan and guests are seated cross-legged on cushions at a low table, known as Toke in Thai. The cuisine served is northern Thai and it is prepared with the western palate in mind as traditional Thai food can be very spicy. The restaurant cum theatre is housed in a traditional wooden house, as homage to what once was a common site in Chiang Mai. Respecting traditional building techniques and decorated with lanterns and banners, unmissable when traversing the city, the whole ambiance reflects times gone by yet revived in a more modern jacket. During this set dinner, entertainers will perform the intricate Forn Leb finger dance; the Forn Thien candle dance; the Ramwong circle dance; and the Ram Dab sword dance. Opt for an additional hill tribe show performed by various members of the Yao, Lahu, Meo, Lisu, and Karen hill tribes after you have finished dinner. A myriad of hand signals, colourful costumes and representing the various ethnic minority styles will pass the revue while feasting elegantly on northern cuisine with a bit of a western flair. After this dinner and dance performance, air-conditioned vehicles will be at the ready to bring you and your travel companions back to your downtown Chiang Mai hotel.

The evening didn't start off well, we were picked up at our hotel 15minutes late and then we were delayed even further due to the driver having difficulty finding his next pick up. Eventually we arrived at the venue and were shown to our place for the meal etc. To our surprise we found that we had to sit on the floor with a pillow to lean on. Difficlut if you're a bit old person. Almost immediately we were served with drinks and the meal that came complete on a small table put in front of us. The meal was ok but nothing outstanding. Then the dancing/entertainment started almost immediately which was quite nice. However it seemed that it was all a bit of a rushed affair get you in, feed you and send you on your way. All in all not bad but fall short of what we expected.

It’s a nice experience to eat on the floor and watch a traditional Thai show. The food was very good and they offered refills. Drinks were not included and were necessary since the food was spicy. I was also ripped off with the cost of the transfer from my hotel. 950 BHT for a 10 minute drive...
