What You Can Expect

Chicago Walking Tour: Interior Architecture of the Loop and Pedway Tour

The Chicago Temple Building has 23 floors dedicated to religious and office use.

Start your walking tour of Chicago’s interior architecture at Chase Tower, located in the Loop. Depending on the day, set out in the morning or afternoon along this central business district, home to many of the city’s iconic structures. Expect to cover a half mile (0.8 km) during an easy 2-hour stroll with plenty of stops.

Stop at Chase Tower Plaza to admire the 'Four Seasons' mosaic by Marc Chagall, and slip inside the Marshall Field and Company Building for a glimpse of the Tiffany & Co–designed ceiling decorating the atrium. Pass by the contemporary shopping and dining complex of Block 37 on State Street, and see the untitled 50-foot-tall (15-meter) Picasso sculpture at Daley Plaza.

Along the way, learn about the Windy City’s art history and architectural design via shared iPads that showcase archival images of Chicago with maps, historic photos, and documentary video clips. You’ll also maneuver through the Chicago Pedway System — a network of climate-controlled underground concourses, passages and sky-bridges that connects buildings throughout downtown.

Your tour concludes at the Chicago Cultural Center, a Chicago Landmark building completed in 1897 and originally the city’s first central public library. Peer up at the marvelous stained glass dome before making your way to your next destination.

The 2 hour tour went by very fast. It was a very cold day but going in and out of buildings made the weather a non-issue. Marie was our host and she was very knowledgeable and very fun. She had some fun facts about Chicago and the architecture, which gave me a new appreciation for some of the landmarks. My two favorite buildings were the Chicago Cultural Building and the United Methodist Church. Admiring their magnificence and learning their history gave me a little insight into the Chicago of years gone by. Thank you for a great Chicago memory!

If you have any interest in architecture and design, this is the tour that will not disappoint. I have a genuine obsession and curiosity of A and D and we had a great time and saw a lot. Our guide was really knowledgeable and answered everyone's questions - in a heartbeat I'd do this tour again.

Elizabeth gave us an extremely well prepared and informative tour of the lobbies of several downtown landmarks as well as the pedway. Her interactive using iPads tour was full of interesting facts and esoterica but also gave me the best explanation of modern architecture I have ever had, and she was entertaining at the same time. The 6 adults in my party all loved it. I highly recommend it!
