If I knew that everyone booking this tour is well-traveled and does not expect the Romanian infrastructure for tourists to be equivalent to that of countries with many more years of open-to-the-West experience in serving travelers, I would have rated it five stars. The fact that it is less developed tourism-wise was a plus for my husband and me and our two friends traveling with us. Our guide, Ilona, was outstanding. She spoke very good English and her knowledge of Romanian history, especially art history, was impressive. I do not know if it was the decision of Rolandia the tour company in Romania or our guide, but I would have liked her to stay at the same hotel as her tour participants during all nights of the tour except when we were in Cluj. I loved going to all the churches and fortresses, so many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and traveling the back roads. Our guide's knowledge of local food specialties was top notch. So if you are a traveler that does not require luxury accommodations likes traveling off the beaten path, going where few USA travelers go, and seeing very old sites, Communist-era structures, and more recent development go for it. This tour is a great match for you!
