Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco

Your tour begins with pickup from Cusco Airport and transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day getting to know Cusco and acclimatizing to the altitude. See Inca ruins, visit Spanish baroque churches and the cathedral, shop for alpaca woolens and other souvenirs in the busy market. Meet your tour guide in your hotel's lobby at 6pm to learn more about your hike to Machu Picchu and spend the evening relaxing at your hotel.

Overnight: Your choice of single-, double- or triple-occupancy hotel room at Hotel Buena Vista or similar in Cusco

Day 2: Cusco - OllantaytamboTravel by private bus through the Sacred Valley, approximatley 2 hours from Cusco. Known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, the lush, fertile valley has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Maize crops can be seen surrounding the river and covering the terraces carved high into the valley walls.

With your guide, head to a community in the Valley to learn about local lifestyle and activities. If your visit coincides with the market, you'll spend time browsing the stalls in search of hand-painted beads or warm ponchos and maybe practicing some of the local language, Quechua.

The town of Ollantaytambo was built over an ancient Inca town, which is a magnificent example of Inca urban planning. This is one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish. Ollantaytambo's archaeological site is located to the east of the Plaza de Armas. The upper terraces of this site offer great photo opportunities of the squared grid town below.

After exploring the archaeological site, you will have a chance to relax on your own at the hotel.

Overnight accommodation: Your choice of single-, double- or triple-occupancy hotel room at Hotel Tika Wasi Valley Hotel or similar in Ollantaytambo

Day 3: Choquequilla -- Socma -- Q'orimarca (B, L, D)

After an early breakfast at your hotel, enjoy the scenic drive to the small moon-worshipping site of Choquequilla and the community of Socma. Meet the horsemen and porters joining you on your trek, then set off on a one-hour hike to the Perolniyoc cascade lookout and photo stop. Continue walking to your campsite, at an elevation of 12,136 feet (3,700 meters), arriving in time for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon hike to the archaeological site of Q'orimarca, used as a checkpoint by the Incas. Returning to your campsite, spend the rest of the day and evening relaxing and getting to know your fellow travelers.

Overnight: Your choice of single-, double- or triple-occupancy tent

Day 4: Chancachuco -- Kuychiccasa (B, L, D)

Get ready for the most challenging day's hiking along the Inca Quarry Trail. Begin with a four-hour hike to the top of the Chancachuco pass, at 14,432 feet (4,400 meters). Have a rest and enjoy the view before descending for a light lunch. In the afternoon, continue uphill to the Kuychiccasa mountain pass (14,760 feet/4,500 meters), then enjoy the downhill hike to the small archaeological site of Inti Punku (Sun Gate). Take in spectacular views of the Sacred Valley and Ollantaytambo, with Mt Veronica in the background, then continue hiking to your campsite for the evening, near the Inca quarry of Kachiqta (altitude 12,300 feet/3,750 meters).

Overnight: Your choice of single-, double- or triple-occupancy tent

Day 5: Kachiqta -- Ollantaytambo -- Aguas Calientes (B, L, D)

After breakfast at your campsite, enjoy a downhill hike to visit the Kachiqta quarry. Explore the site's tombs and storage areas, and see the abandoned carvings known as 'tired rocks', which were never completed due to the Spanish conquest. Enjoy more downhill hiking to Ollantaytambo train station, then eat a box lunch while admiring the scenery on your train journey to Aguas Calientes. Have a well-deserved rest in the town’s soothing hot springs and spend a relaxing evening at your hotel.

Overnight: Your choice of single-, double- or triple-occupancy hotel room at Plaza Andina Hotel or similar in Aguas Calientes

Day 6: Machu Picchu -- Cusco (B)

It's an early start today to catch the 5:30am bus to Machu Picchu. The 30-minute trip takes you along a winding road to the sacred Incan site. Enjoy a guided 1.5-hour visit with your trekking guide, then explore Machu Picchu’s amazing temples, palaces and buildings on your own. In the afternoon, travel by bus to Aguas Calientes, train to Ollantaytambo and minibus to your Cusco hotel, where you can celebrate your Machu Picchu hike with a pisco sour!

Overnight: Your choice of single-, double- or triple-occupancy hotel room at Hotel Buena Vista or similar in Cusco

Day 7: Cusco (B)

After breakfast at your hotel, shop for more souvenirs or visit Cusco's sites and churches at your own leisure.
