Barbados Garrison

The Garrison Historic Area From 1655 large fleets of British ships and soldiers were visiting and Barbados making it there base of operation. In the early years there were no barracks for them or provisions, the care and expense of the officers fell in the hands of Barbadians themselves. After repeated visits this became quite burdensome especially considering it was at a time when the island was quite impoverished. The legislature of Barbados was moved to petition the British government for a permanent garrison to be built on the island. It was not until 1780 that it was finally decided by the British Government to station a permanent garrison on the island. It was eventually decided that the Garrisons should be built near Charles Fort and St Anne’s Castle. 16 acres were purchased in 1789 and construction began by the early 19th century most of the buildings had been completed and had grown to cover 64 acres. The Garrison in Barbados is in fact the largest in the Caribbean. Many of the buildings were constructed of London brick brought out as ballast in ships which returned with sugar. Some 60 of the original buildings are still in existence today. The Savannah of itself was a very rocky area where many crabs lived. It had to be filled in and leveled for the troops to practice on. It was also the birthplace of cricket in Barbados and today serves as the islands racetrack. On November 30th 1966 Barbados was led into Independence by the then Premier Errol Walton Barrow, officially celebrating the achievement of nationhood as a sovereign and independent state within the Commonwealth

I had an amazing time with our tour guide Ryan! He made the experience very fun, educational and memorable. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who wants to visit Barbados.
Charles is great! Great sightseeing.
Jessica_N, May 2022
Charles was a great tour guide, he was able to answer any questions we had about Barbados and was very easy going and flexible. What a great guy! He was very accommodating for my family of four. Only thing I regret not doing is not booking a private tour with him instead! You never know who you'll end up doing your tour with which could really make a difference with what type of experience you will have. I wish the tour was an hour shorter, I was feeling a little burnt out by the end. Still amazing nonetheless and such a great introduction to this beautiful country!

Great tour with fantastic guide
David_N, Nov 2021
We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and learned many facts about the beautiful island of Barbados from Charles. We were a mixed group of island returners and new visitors and Charles was knowledgeable and very personable. We loved the beaches and the views many beautiful photos taken. We appreciate the last few months have been difficult for everyone and felt extremely safe throughout the tour. Would use your tour company again, we’ll communicated and ease of booking. Thank you

Tour of the beautiful island of Barbados.
Kevin_M, Mar 2020
We had a wonderful tour of this beautiful island which was made extra special by Stephen, our guide for the day. He gave us lots of detail about the island and took us along the beautiful east coast which is so different from the west. We stopped at lots of lovely places to take photos.
Comprehensive tour
Kimberly_Z, Mar 2020
Great overview of the island. Especially enjoyed the stop at North Point. Stops at the various beaches may have been a bit superfluous. Would have been nice to stop in Holetown or Speightstown perhaps.
Wonderful Barbados Island Tour
William_H, Feb 2020
What an amazing tour of Barbados we received from Stephen and Glory Tours, it was so much more than we expected. After stopping at some beautiful beach sites and the College for a snack, we had a very nice lunch up at the northern point of the island. They went out of their way to make us comfortable and this is a small tour of 12 maximum. We saw windmills, sugar cane fields and much local life including monkeys crossing the road and a mongoose running by. To top it off, we went by the horse racing track and Stephen stopped so we could watch one of the races. We were so close we could almost touch the horses. So much attention and above and beyond what we expected.

Helpful tour
vargasab, Jan 2020
My wife and I really enjoyed the tour. It’s a great way to see different parts of the island. Lunch at Animal Flower cave was our favorite part. The stops at each location are fairly short. If you want to spend lots of time at each location, you will likely have to go back on your own.
Beautiful Barbados

Had a great experience from pick up point at the hotel till at our return. Our driver and guide Stephen was great, we had a lot of fun and we really enjoyed the day and all the places we've been visiting. We had a lovely lunch at the Animal Flower Cave. I recommend this tour for a day well spent and having the opportunity to see nearly the whole island.

Ronald L, Mar 2018
Charles was our guide for the day. He picked us up outside the cruise terminal and then had to pick up additional tourists. As he drove he gave us information regarding the people of the island and the island's history. Stopped at Carlisle Beach for photos and then to the Garrison. Not much of interest there. Stopped at Enterprise or Miami Beach and I was the only one to sample the fish fritters. On to Foul Bay, Codrington College, St John's Parish Church and Bathsheba Beach. From there we drove along the east coast and then up to North Point and Animal Flower Cave and Restaurant. Lunch was waiting on us when we got there and it was very good. The view from the restaurant was spectacular. We felt too much time was spent at some venues prior to the lunch and as a result we basically just had a ride back to the cruise terminal with no additional stops.
