Great tour. Bus comfortable, lunch was very good, service great. The knowledge and caliber of tour guides exceptional. The hot spring baths are an experience in itself. Enjoyed the day immensely.
The scenery from the train of the Taieri Gorge were breath taking. A bus picked us up at the cruise ship terminal and brought us to the railway station where we received our tickets and seating assignment. The architecture of the railway station building is beautiful, a sight in and of itself. After the train returned from the gorge, we boarded a bus to see the sights in Dunedin. The history of the city and the architecture was explained by our guide, very interesting. The Taieri Gorge railroad experience is a must see for people visiting Dunedin.
Our ship was late into port, so we missed the train going up the Gorge, which departs at exactly 9:30AM. Instead, Bill, our driver guide, drove us through the beautiful countryside to the upper train stop. He was very interesting, knowledgeable, and personable and we actually had the best of both as the train takes the same route up and back. The train is a vintage train, and the scenery is absolutely stunning. The flowers were all in bloom and the gorge is really interesting. We had a little time to explore the rail station and the town, which is gorgeous, then had a nice drive through the town and neighborhoods. We really enjoyed our day in Dunedin and the Gorge!
This was one of the highlights of our cruise. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous!
Driver Bill was very informative. Got to see a lot of sights around the City of Dunedin and learned lots. After the tour around the city, we were taken out to the Pukerangi Station, a very small station where we boarded the train to start out the railway tour along the Taieri Gorge. The train was a historical wooden train. Found our seat and was then we could buy lunch on the train. Bought lunch and then returned to our seat for relaxing and enjoyable ride or you could stand outside to take pictures of the Taieri Gorge. Loved the travel on the train and the sights were spectacular. It was nice to have the conductor describe the scenery and kept the passengers informed as we pass through the tunnels and other scenery as we travelled along the magnificent view along the Taieri Gorge. The train ride was also relaxing as it travelled on the tracks back to the Dunedin Railway Station for the four hour ride. Upon arrival back at the Station, we had some time before the Driver arrived we took the opportunity to take photos of the picturesque station and take a look at the souvenirs located in the office. Before heading back to the ship, we had a quick stopover at the Otago University. Got out of the coach and took a few pictures of the main town hall building and other building that was there on the way back to the coach.
I would highly recommend this City and RailwayTour.
Up and down the same gorge, so what you missed going up you can catch going down. Saw too many sheep to count and the clear cutting they do when logging. Lunch is available on the train. Gorge is very picturesque.
Great day. excellent views, train ride was great and dunedin is a beautiful place. fully recommend all to see
The rail journey was worth doing as the scenery was breathtaking. I also enjoyed the tour of Dunedin. Worth doing.
Great excursion .......... and better offer than the cruiseline.
Fantastic scenery on the rail trip. Very knowledgeable driver for the city tour.
Our trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway Tour was amazing. The scenery was lovely and food on the train was great....the pies are unbelievable.
I would recommend this trip for anyone to do
This was an amazing tour that we almost did not get to take. There were rough seas and high winds delaying our entry into the Port. The Captain of our Princess Cruise ship made one final attempt to get into the Port and we are so glad we made it.
Our bus driver was actually the owner of the Company and seemed to know everything about Dunedin on our City Tour. Since we were late getting into Port he drove us up to the spot where the train turned around to return to Dunedin. So we got a tour of the interior part of the country which was beautiful! as well as the Taieri Gorge on the return rail trip which was spectacular.
We were all a little nervous at the beginning of the day since we were so delayed. But our Guide/Owner was positive that we would wind up having an enjoyable day and he was certainly right. Dunedin is a gorgeous city with a rich history as to its founding and heritage. One of our favorite experiences in New Zealand!
Incidentally, the price through Viator was about half of the price for booking through the Cruise line. The only differences in the excursion was that the train stopped at the ship and returned you to the ship rather that being bused to and from the dock. The other minor difference was the booking through the Cruise line was that their price included a champagne lunch where we purchased a box lunch on the train.
Really enjoyed this day trip. We did miss the train as was almost expected as the cruise ship didn't arrive in early enough but the bus ride up to the very small station of Pukerangi was a different look at the countryside compared to the train trip on the return journey. Loved the travel on the train and the views were amazing especially going over some of the bridges. There was a small cafe on the train so there wasn't any worry about where the next feed was coming from.
We were picked up at the port and transferred to the train station which is beautiful. There were locals dressed up in period costume who walked up and down the platform which made is all the more special. Our seats on the train were allocated all have a window . The narrative along the way is enjoyable and gives all info required about the train and gorge which is spectacular. The trip is approx 4 hours return. There is a snack bar that is easy to walk to on the train which sells a good variety of food and drink. We were able to get off the train at the top of the gorge and there was a small market with hand crafted good you could purchase. On return to Dunedin we then had a 2 hour tour on a coach around the city and beaches which was enjoyable and gave a great overview of the area.
Amazing tour! Tour was excellent from start to finish. Great guides. Highly recommend!
Very nice day, The Gorge is fantastic and reminded me a little of the rocky mountaineer on a smaller scale.
My only complaint is that on the tour after the train ride is that we didn't stop for chocolate at the Cadbury's factory. My wife is now suffering chocolate withdrawal syndrome but we did see all the sights of Dunedin.
Great trip just go for it.

Enjoyed the day with friends and a lovely train ride with marvelous views including a stop at the top of the railway for a little retail therapy
My husband and I traveled on the Taieri Gorge Railway and we thought it was very scenic, with traveling through mountains and over bridges and following the river. It was well worth the money and time to do it. We would recommend to do this tour. City tour is included and you see some wonderful views and some interesting information about Dunedin. Food for lunch or a snack is available, but need to get in early for hot food such as pies or sausage rolls.
Nice surprise was the little market on top were they change the engine around to come back down.
