When your cruise ship docks in Dunedin, take a full-day excursion that combines two South Isalnd highlights: a scenic round-trip ride on the Taieri Gorge Railway, and an afternoon tour of the Otago Peninsula. The train steams from Dunedin to Pukerangi, passing through Taieri Plains and Taieri Gorge, and stopping en route for photo ops. Then dig your toes into the sand of Otago’s beaches and keep a lookout for marine wildlife.
  • Full-day shore excursion with Taieri Gorge Railway and Otago Peninsula, from Dunedin
  • Take a 4-hour round-trip train ride from Dunedin to Pukerangi
  • See the rugged South Island mountains from the Taieri Gorge Railway
  • Walk along the beaches of the Otago Peninsula on a guided afternoon tour
  • Have the option to upgrade for a box lunch on the train
After morning pickup at the cruise port in Dunedin, transfer to the Dunedin Railway Station, a 19th-century Renaissance revival-style building designed by an architect nicknamed ‘Gingerbread George.’

Have about 30 minutes free to see the historic station, then use the provided ticket to board the Taieri Gorge Railway. The train is equipped with heated carriages, large windows and restrooms, as well as open-air viewing platform cars. Chug along the Taieri Plains, crossing bridges and viaducts that span the Taieri Gorge and other scenic canyons. The train hugs the curves around the mountains and slows down at scenic viewpoints, providing great vantage points on the South Island’s rugged wilderness.

Hear informative commentary about the the region during the train ride, which takes two hours each way. You can upgrade to include a gourmet box lunch, or purchase refreshments at the onboard cafe. At the last station, you'll have about 15 minutes to check out Pukerangi before the return journey to Dunedin.

Upon you return to Dunedin, your guide meets you at the train station and takes you on your afternoon tour of the Otago Peninsula. Make stops at several locations with sweeping views — photographers will love the postcard-perfect scenery. Visit beaches where you may glimpse whales, dolphins or some native New Zealand wildlife, then return to the cruise port in the late afternoon.

Cost of tour - $185 per personNumber of persons - 4Total cost - $740Duration of tour – 8.5 HOURSISSUES:Not enough toilet / refreshment stopsWe had plenty of time as ship was not sailing until 9PM. Guide commented on this more than once because he was going to be able to show us more than he can usually. tour was too long for only a midday stop at train terminus. here, items of clothing / jewellery were for sale - but no food!Once we got on the train, we asked one of the workers if there was any gluten free food available and he shrugged and said he didn’t know. when we went to the buffet car, there were only pies and sandwiches.Guide had no care factor about our gluten free dietary needs.when train arrived at Dunedin station we asked if we could get something to eat and guide said there was no time – we still has another 2.5 hours to go where he was taking us. this last 2.5 hours was not enjoyable as we were so hungry.port restrictions do not allow us to bring food from the ship.we were not able to eat until we were back on the ship (after 6pm).visitors like to enjoy the local food and wine / beer – it should be a part of the experience.someone on the bus asked about a coffee and the guide said “coffee stops are a tour guide’s nightmare”.fresh chilled water would have been appreciated – our water in backpacks got quite warmtour guide commentary was averagetrain ride scenery was okwe feel this was a huge waste of money and would not want to do this tour ever again.

We enjoyed the bus trip to our stop where we boarded the train. Train ride was very good and lunch was available on the train. Unfortunately we had rain when we went to the Otago Peninsula so we were not able to see much. Our guide did a good job even though the weather was poor.

Had a great day on this trip would highly recommend. Our guide took us on a tour over looking Dudedin then to Baldwin street and to the train station where we boarded our train. The food on the train is reasonably priced the sandwiches the best I had tasted in a long time. When we arrived back to the station she was waiting and off we went for our tour out to the Otago peninsula. We went to a beach where there we four sea lions basking in the sun and also a blue penguin's nest. Saw lots of the area that I hadn't previously seen. Value for money.

Unfortunately it was pouring with rain all day so unable to take any decent photographs outside the carriage as we got wet through. The afternoon tour did not come up to what we expected from the description given as we were only shown one beach and a five minute stop to look at it. When I asked about seeing some wildlife, he said we hadnt got time so drove us through the town and back to the ship early as he said he was a stand-in driver and was more bothered about getting back to his guests who were checking in and checking out of his B and B.

Our Dunedin NZ excursion was wonderful. Theresa, our guide, knew everything about our surroundings and the sea birds in the shallow waters around Otago Peninsula. She took us to a beach on the Pacific where we waded and saw sea lions resting on the sand. The train ride over Taieri Gorge was beautiful with lots of photo ops. Definitely recommend this tour. It was a long day, but well worth it thanks to Theresa.

Enjoyed the tour. Our guide Teresa was knowledgeable and organized. It was a refreshing change from other tour guides. Teresa knew everything about the wildlife and kept us informed

Of the 11 excursions I took, the Taieri Gorge Railway was my favorite. The train ride was fun, accommodations very good. I took lots of pictures from the train as I stood outside the car door. I enjoyed the round-trip ride and the citizens dressed for the time period the train station was built. A lovely excursion!

This trip was awesome beautiful views the train station itself is a glorious building and nice to kind of go back in time with the old train. Maybe a bit on the long side but obviously that cant be avoided.

Wonderful day. Definitely should be on the 'must do' list. Drivers/Guides both very knowledgeable.
