Meet your guide upon pickup from your hotel in central Shanghai. You'll depart in the morning for the pretty water town of Wuzhen, located about a 2-hour drive away. On arrival, get admission to the Ancient Bed Museum, which features antique beds from the Ming and Qing Dynasties as well as modern styles. Learn how the bed was a focal point of daily life in ancient Chinese culture.
Continue on to your next stop, a wine distillery workshop that is Wuzhen's last remaining winery. Dating back centuries, the workshop still makes traditional sanbai rice wine, and you can watch how this full-bodied, soft yet lingering liquor is produced. Then visit another workshop whose specialty is manufacturing indigo fabrics. Observe the stages of production from spinning to weaving to dying. Original Wuzhen cloth is, of course, available to purchase.
After you're served lunch in a historical building, discover another traditional Chinese art form: a shadow puppet show accompanied by a small orchestra of Chinese instruments such as the erhu and the dizi, or Chinese flute.
Finally, explore the canals of Wuzhen aboard a traditional wupeng (black-awning) boat and watch locals going about their daily lives. Then meander at your leisure during some free time before returning to Shanghai.
Please note: A minimum of two adults per booking is required.
