Then visit the chilling Old Calton Burial Ground or Canongate Kirkyard cemetery to learn about body-snatching and some of the infamous interred.
  • 2-hour walking tour of Edinburgh’s murky past and present, led by a knowledgeable guide
  • Explore the eerie, cobblestone streets of Edinburgh’s Old Town
  • Climb Calton Hill, the site of witch trials and pagan rituals, and take in panoramic views of the city
  • Visit Old Calton Burial Ground or Canongate Kirkyard cemetery and learn about body-snatching, vampires and more
  • Discover the capital’s gruesome past through the guide’s gripping commentary
Your ghostly adventure starts in the evening on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in Old Town. Meet your local guide and steel yourself for a walk through the dark recesses of Edinburgh’s haunted history, hearing stories of murder, monsters, cannibals and other local oddities. Cross your fingers that you’ll encounter (or not encounter!) a spooky character at one of the venues to come.

You’ll first wind through shadowed alleys and cobbled streets to North Bridge and Calton Hill, where you’ll get panoramic views of the city and a dose of gruesome history. Explore the monuments perched high above the city and learn about the grisly witch trials that occurred here. Still a sacred area for many, Calton Hill continues to host pagan rituals like the Edinburgh Beltane Fire Festival.

Afterwards, continue to one of Edinburgh’s famous cemeteries. Stop at the 17th-century Canongate Kirkyard cemetery or Old Calton Burial Ground, where David Hume is buried. Hear about his fabled deal with the devil, as well as the history of Burke and Hare, body snatchers who made a killing (so to speak!) by selling corpses to medical science.

Between stops, hear other creepy stories of execution, murder, torture and hauntings. Your 2-hour tour returns to the Royal Mile at a local pub. Pop inside for a drink to help warm your chilled soul (own expense)!

My husband, my two boys (ages 18 and 15) went on the tour on Sunday, December 2, 2018. We had a great time. Fun and informative. Melanie, our tour guide was absolutely terrific

The darkside walking tour is an absolute must for everyone looking for an interesting, funny and spooky guided walk through Edinburgh. This tour will bring you to some unexpected and, sometimes well hidden, gems of this historical city like for example Calton Hill. Climbing this hill will be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view over the city by night while learning about its history. Our guide James definitely made sure that we would make the most out of this tour. He was funny, enthusiastic and well informed about the more haunted and mysterious side of Edinburgh. An absolute must!

We were a group of 4 adults, we joined the larger group after having dinner near by. The guide, Alistair, was energetic and animated, it was fun to listen to his tales. Lots of walking! This would not be a tour for someone who has trouble walking, there are hills up and down as well as steps on this tour. At the end we stopped at a kirk yard for some additional tales. Very fun, great guide!

We were very lucky as we had a mild, dry night to do this walk. We didn’t expect to be going out of the city a bit and up Calton Hill so that was a pleasant surprise. The guide was very knowledgeable and made the walk fun. He brought the group into his stories and his telling of them was done without a hesitation. Very professional and friendly. Only thing we weren’t sure about was why we were each given a little cloakroom type ticket when we arrived at the meeting point as we didn’t use them for anything and were never asked for them again! Great tour though.

We took this tour on our first night in Edinburgh - great way to figure out how Edinburgh in laid out. Our guide was Adam Gloser - who had great enthusiasm and was friendly to everyone on the tour.

Adam G was a fantastic tour guide. His stories were varied and engrossing and, we later found out, fully developed by Adam himself. We were told of murder, grave robbing, and vampires and how they related back to the beautiful and storied scenery of Edinburgh and Leith. What stood out the most about this tour was the sombre recounting of King James VI's obsession with the dark arts and Adam's respect for the thousands of people wrongfully accused of witchcraft and executed under the king's rule. Using this as a starting point, Adam weaved an incredibly heartfelt and authentic message of acceptance, which was revisited later on in the tour with equal passion. Between our host and the wonderful scenery, this was the best ghost tour I've ever had the pleasure of attending.

Good tour! Myself and my family enjoyed the locations we walked to, mostly Calton Hill as it was just at sunset so the views were fantastic. I enjoyed our guide thoroughly as well. He was very knowledgeable and very likable the perfect demeanor for this tour! I was under the impression this would be more of a ghost tour so I was disappointed when the guide said instead this was NOT a ghost tour and more a historical tour involving mystery and murder. I still enjoyed the tour but warning to anyone who wants a ghost tour- this is not for you!

Adam made the tour really funny and informative. This was a great way to get a good lay of the city on my first day, plus learn some really interesting history of the city. Decided to add a few things to see on my trip based on what I learned surgeon's hall and arthur's seat. Would have totally missed out.
