Edinburgh Shore Excursion: City Highlights Tour

Visit the Holyrood Palace on your Edinburgh shore excursion

Your 8-hour tour of historic Edinburgh begins in the morning with coach pickup at Edinburgh Port. Meet your friendly guide and settle in for an hour-long drive through the city, passing sites like Arthur’s Seat and Princes Street. Travel from New Town to Old Town – both UNESCO-listed sites – en route to your first stop: Edinburgh Castle. There, admire the castle and the sweeping views from Castle Rock, or take an interior tour (own expense). Explore grand buildings and learn about medieval life in the palace, its royal residents like Mary, Queen of Scots, and the many bloody battles fought here such as the War of Independence in the 14th century.

Afterwards, take some time to independently explore the Royal Mile and grab your own lunch before heading to Palace of Holyroodhouse (Holyrood Palace), Her Majesty the Queen’s home in Scotland. Take an optional tour (own expense) of the palace interior to see the chambers of Mary, Queen of Scots and the State Apartments where Queen Mary witnessed the murder of her secretary at the hand of a jealous contingent.

Next, continue to the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith. For this final leg of your tour, purchase an independent audio tour through the glamorous boat that is a site of much royal history, including serving as the Queen’s floating palace for more than 40 years. See the five decks and hear about illustrious guests like Winston Churchill.

Your full-day tour concludes at the departure point in time for dinner and evening activities.

Excellent tour! Edinburgh is a beautiful city. This tour covers most of the highlights. As we need to take tender for this port, we left the ship early to ensure we got to the meeting place ahead of time. There were many buses parking there, we found our bus waiting at 8am for our 9am meeting time.

Met the tour driver once we were tendered in from the cruise ship. 1st stop, Royal Yacht Britannia - this was the yacht that the Royal Family used for years until it was retired. It was not at all as lavish as I thought it would be. It was very interesting. We only had an hour to do the tour which normally takes 1 1/2 hrs, so we had to speed walk thru the boat and the narratives. There were many photos of the Royal Family - the best one was where Princess Di was greeting her boys.
Next - He took us through the Queen's Park, which was gorgeous and huge, with lots of walking paths and rolling hills. Looked like a great place.
Final destination - Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile - we had 4 hours to tour the castle, walk around the Royal Mile, shop and eat lunch. There were a lot of great shops to check out and buy souvenirs. The Castle and the Royal Mile were filled with lots of tourists and some street entertainers. It was a nice afternoon.
Our driver got us back in plenty of time to catch the tender back to the ship.

You sure don't have to worry about this tour company leaving without you! We waited almost a half hour before we started our trip into Edinburgh. There were a couple people who had trouble locating the bus and were quite late. We had a great bus driver. Unfortunately it cut a half hour off our day. We only had 1 hour to visit the ship Brittania. Definitely could have used more time. I rushed through .we had about 3 hours or more of free time, so we could wander up the royal mile and enjoy what we wanted. It was a great day
