What You Can Expect

The Royal Yacht Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia

At your leisure, make your own way to the Royal Yacht Britannia at port in Leith (15 minutes from central Edinburgh). Before boarding, pass through the fascinating Visitor Centre to learn a bit of the ship’s history, see splendid historic photos and pick up your headset. This ship – which traveled more than one million miles during its 44 years in service – is the last in a line of 83 Royal Yachts.

Take a promenade along the five decks as your audio guide shares fascinating stories about the British Royal Family and the many guests who spent time on board such as Sir Winston Churchill, Boris Yeltsin and Nelson Mandela. Over approximately two hours, admire the ship’s many features from the furnishings on loan from the Royal Collection to the State Drawing Room, the Sun Lounge and the Admiral’s Cabin. Fun for all, boat enthusiasts will particularly enjoy seeing the working side of the ship such as the crew's quarters.

If whimsy strikes you, head to the Royal Deck Tea Room where you may purchase sandwiches, baked treats, warm drinks or alcoholic beverages. Relax in the same spot where the British Royal Family enjoyed extravagant buffets and receptions over the years.

Excellent tour. Well organised, interesting. It would be helpful for Viator to let guests know how long it takes as I ran out of time.

The royal yacht was well worth a visit is a look back to a time when Britain was truly a great nation. Its a pity they did not replace it with a new one.

Having bought tickets online through Viator, we were able to skip the queue to the box office, showed the confirmation email and given tickets in exchange. Short queue to get onto the ship. Brilliantly laid out so you get to see all the areas of the ship. Had a nice lunch in the on-board restaurant. My 85 year old mother was with us and she found it great too, with places to sit whilst going round. Well worth the drive from Loch Lomond area. Great value for money.

What a brilliant experience to be able to walk the decks that have been witness to so much history. I would recommend that you buy your tickets online before your visit to save yourself a wait in the long line. It's a self guided tour that has been very well thought out, and flows easily from one room to the next. Set aside a couple of hours so you can take in all of the pictures of the Royal family, which are spread throughout the yacht, and definitely have lunch at the on board restaurant. The food was delicious, as was the glass of bubbles! How often do you get the chance to dine where royalty once did???
