What You Can Expect

West Highland Lochs and Castles Small Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Doune Castle

Your 10-hour tour of Scotland’s Highlands lochs and castles sets off from central Edinburgh in the morning. After meeting your friendly guide and boarding the coach, sit back for the journey from the city through the Lowlands.

Your first stop is at Stirling Castle, former residence of Scottish royals including Mary, Queen of Scots. Snap photos from outside and learn about the site’s colorful history riddled with battles such as the Battle of Stirling Bridge, led by the legendary William Wallace. Then continue to Doune Castle for another unique photo opportunity.
Aside from its historic importance as a critical medieval stronghold, Doune Castle has enjoyed more modern recognition as the film site for Monty Python and The Holy Grail and the TV series Outlanders, based on the books of Diana Gabaldon. Opt to visit the castle (own expense) or snap photos from outside and take a stroll around the surrounding area.
As your coach continues through dense forests and highland peaks, your expert guide will share fascinating true and fictitious tales about local figures like Rob Roy MacGregor — dubbed the ‘Scottish Robin Hood’ — who is buried in the Braes of Balquhidder.
Stop for lunch (own expense) en route to tranquil Loch Awe and the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle. Then continue toward Inveraray Castle on the shores of Lake Fyne, where you’ll have free time for an optional castle tour (own expense; tour runs from April to October only). Learn about battles that occurred in this region and rulers like King Robert the Bruce and Clan Campbell, who possessed the Argyll lands for centuries.
The final leg of you tour takes you through the Arrochar Alps and to Loch Lomond. Enjoy epic views of Scotland's largest lake from the charming town of Luss before returning to the capital.
Your full-day excursion ends near Waverly Bridge in the evening.

This is a long tour in which you visit several beautiful castles and have the opportunity to view various lochs or lakes, which are very common in Scotland. You'll see great views of the Scottish highlands. The trip was comfortable, and our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. If you have several days in Edinburgh, it will be worth it to spend one of those in this tour.

Fabulous tour through the western highlands! We lucked out and it was sunny for the majority of the day. Definitely pay for entrance into the extra castle stops as they are worth it. Ross was an amazing tour guide. Very informative whilst keeping it light and funny. Would highly recommend!

This tour is a must. Gavin was a pleasant and knowledgeable guide as we drove to Doune Castle (uninhabited) and the beautiful Inveraray Castle (inhabited by Duke of Argyll, Clan Campbell) and gardens.

Ewan B. our tour guide was great! He was very knowledgeable and personable! He gave you inside details to the history of the castles and lands we went to and if you had additional questions he would do his best to answer those as well. He made the experience very pleasurable, and the tour itself is amazing I would highly recommend it.

This was a great all-day trip to see the Scottish Highlands, castles and The Scottish countryside. The meeting area is convently located at a coffee shop in city center. The 16-passenger bus is comfy but not too roomy like most things in the UK :- Our driver was very informative, talkative and willing to ask any and all questions. The trip was smooth and free of problems. The great thing about these guided trips is not having to drive and being able to stay focused on the sights out the huge windows or simply taking a nap on the long trip back to the city. This, and another trip later in the week will account for most of our photo memories from our trip to Scotland!
