What You Can Expect

West Highland Lochs and Castles Small Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Kilchurn Castle, Scotland

Your 10-hour tour of Scotland’s Highlands lochs and castles sets off from central Edinburgh in the morning. After meeting your friendly guide and boarding the coach, sit back for the journey from the city through the Lowlands.

Your first stop is at Stirling Castle, former residence of Scottish royals including Mary, Queen of Scots. Snap photos from outside and learn about the site’s colorful history riddled with battles such as the Battle of Stirling Bridge, led by the legendary William Wallace. Then continue to Doune Castle for another unique photo opportunity.
Aside from its historic importance as a critical medieval stronghold, Doune Castle has enjoyed more modern recognition as the film site for Monty Python and The Holy Grail and the TV series Outlanders, based on the books of Diana Gabaldon. Opt to visit the castle (own expense) or snap photos from outside and take a stroll around the surrounding area.
As your coach continues through dense forests and highland peaks, your expert guide will share fascinating true and fictitious tales about local figures like Rob Roy MacGregor — dubbed the ‘Scottish Robin Hood’ — who is buried in the Braes of Balquhidder.
Stop for lunch (own expense) en route to tranquil Loch Awe and the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle. Then continue toward Inveraray Castle on the shores of Lake Fyne, where you’ll have free time for an optional castle tour (own expense; tour runs from April to October only). Learn about battles that occurred in this region and rulers like King Robert the Bruce and Clan Campbell, who possessed the Argyll lands for centuries.
The final leg of you tour takes you through the Arrochar Alps and to Loch Lomond. Enjoy epic views of Scotland's largest lake from the charming town of Luss before returning to the capital.
Your full-day excursion ends near Waverly Bridge in the evening.

It was a great day well spent with our guide tour Eric. He gave us lots of information about Scotland and the castles and lakes we visited. He even sang some songs for us!

BEST TOUR and GUIDE--Mike G.!!! My best friend and I booked this tour as part of our last minute trip to Edinburgh, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. The meeting point was easy to find and had toilets and coffee/snacks, the bus was very comfortable and clean, and the itinerary was well planned. We had Mike G. as our guide--by far the most knowledgeable and conscientious tour guide I have ever had. If you can request him, DO! He provided fun facts and historical background for every stop, loch, castle, town, glen and ben, and he knew when to give the guests a wee rest thoughtfully playing Scottish music during these times. Between Mike and the stunning natural scenery of the highlands, this was the best tour I have every taken!

Absolutely loved this tour! It was fantastic. I hope to go back one day and spend more time in the Highlands. I loved visiting Castle Doune which was used as a film location in both Outlander and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Inverary Castle, the home of the Duke of Argyl and Chief of Clan Campbell, was also a wonderful stop. The grounds and castle are incredibly scenic and very beautiful. A Christmas episode for Downton Abby was filmed here. It's the episode where they were hunting outside with their cousin. I also loved seeing Loch Lommond, which was breathtaking, as well as some other lovely lochs along the way. Our tour guide was excellent. I really enjoyed learning about the varying clans and their history was fascinating. I highly recommend this tour!

A great tour with an awesome tour guide! Ross was extremely knowledgeable about the area, the history and the land marks. It was very interesting to get his insight as a highlander himself on the history and the current relationship between the highlanders, the lowlanders and the British. I loved that there were frequent stops to see lochs and the countryside but I wish we had a little more time in the charming town, Inverary.

You will most likely not regret this tour, as you visit some of the most scenic features of Scotland! Visited in November and had a fantastic time. The drive did not feel long with frequent stops and there is much to see and do. Would highly recommend tour guide Jude - she is a natural, and was genuine, interesting, and very entertaining - like night and day compared with other tours.

Our tourguide Nicky O. was great! As an Edinburgh native he really knew so much about the history, geography, and politics of the area, and his insights made the trip special. Only wished we had maybe not bothered stopping at Sterling Castle since we didn't have time for a tour and instead had more time to tour Doune Castle, where we were a bit rushed. But a minor complaint, overall a marvelous day!

We had Ross as our driver on this trip and he was AWESOME. He made our whole day trip the best you could want. The history that he gave on each place we went and his family history and stories just made everything so much more enjoyable. We made a stop and he got out his bagpipes and played a couple of songs for us. Made our first tour in Scotland the highlight of the trip.
