What You Can Expect

West Highland Lochs and Castles Small Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Kilchurn Castle, Scotland

Your 10-hour tour of Scotland’s Highlands lochs and castles sets off from central Edinburgh in the morning. After meeting your friendly guide and boarding the coach, sit back for the journey from the city through the Lowlands.

Your first stop is at Stirling Castle, former residence of Scottish royals including Mary, Queen of Scots. Snap photos from outside and learn about the site’s colorful history riddled with battles such as the Battle of Stirling Bridge, led by the legendary William Wallace. Then continue to Doune Castle for another unique photo opportunity.
Aside from its historic importance as a critical medieval stronghold, Doune Castle has enjoyed more modern recognition as the film site for Monty Python and The Holy Grail and the TV series Outlanders, based on the books of Diana Gabaldon. Opt to visit the castle (own expense) or snap photos from outside and take a stroll around the surrounding area.
As your coach continues through dense forests and highland peaks, your expert guide will share fascinating true and fictitious tales about local figures like Rob Roy MacGregor — dubbed the ‘Scottish Robin Hood’ — who is buried in the Braes of Balquhidder.
Stop for lunch (own expense) en route to tranquil Loch Awe and the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle. Then continue toward Inveraray Castle on the shores of Lake Fyne, where you’ll have free time for an optional castle tour (own expense; tour runs from April to October only). Learn about battles that occurred in this region and rulers like King Robert the Bruce and Clan Campbell, who possessed the Argyll lands for centuries.
The final leg of you tour takes you through the Arrochar Alps and to Loch Lomond. Enjoy epic views of Scotland's largest lake from the charming town of Luss before returning to the capital.
Your full-day excursion ends near Waverly Bridge in the evening.

We really enjoyed our day trip to the West Highland Lochs and Castles. The trip was very comfortable in the van and our guide Nicky was very personable, knowledgeable and provided a wonderful day trip for our family. We will definitely book another trip with you when we come back to Edinburgh.

This trip was the highlight of my whole vacation! We learned SO MUCH from our awesome guide Craig. He was so much fun and truly enjoyed his job. He offered to take photos of us so we'd both be in the shot and took the extra time to make sure we got the most out of each site we visited. I can't recommend this trip enough. Great variety of sites, gorgeous scenery and a true Scottish experience. Thanks Craig for a great day!

The guide with only about 3 month's experience was excellent. She was able to maneuver the vehicle and talk about the tour at the same time very well.

Our local contact was Rabbies Trail Burners out of Edinburgh. We toured on a comfortable mini bus with Gillian guide and Craig driver learning the route. It was a super awesome day! We learned so much, saw so much, and felt complete reassurance in our decision to visit Scotland for our honeymoon.

Gillian played Scottish music from time to time on the bus to help set the tone before arriving at locations and to help us understand Scotland's history, culture, and context. Craig gave us additional insight at the tour locations. Both were super friendly and enthusiast to introduce us to this region of Scotland. For instance, Craig told us to make sure we tried an Irn Bru before we left Scotland, and we did. : It tasted like pink bubble gum to our American tongues, but we noticed it everywhere and felt like insiders rather than tourists having tried it.

We visited Doune Castle, St. Conan's Kirk to wait out some rain, Kilkurn ruins, Inverary Castle had lunch there too, so cool!, Loch Lommand, and viewed Stirling Castle on our way back to Edinburgh.

We are Outlander fans so visiting Doune castle Leoch was very cool! And having lunch at Inverary was a special trip. Even our small stop to view the old military road at Rest and Be Thankful was beautiful. The whole feel of the trip made me feel like I was driving along just like Clarie and Frank, and Clair and Jamie while we walked along lochs and through old churches.

This was our favorite tour, mostly because our guide Greame was funny, personable, and full of information about all the places we went. This is a Rabbie's tour, we took three of them, and all were great fun. The scenery was beautiful and the castles very charming. So, sign up and do it.m

I loved the small group aspect of this tour. Our guide Craig was fantastic! It felt like going on a road trip with an old friend. He was full of information and seemed to have a personal connection with everything we saw. I went on this tour to see the castles- and they were great, but I was really in awe of the West Highland Lochs. Everything I saw on this tour was beautiful. I went on the Loch Ness tour, as well, and in case you are wondering if the two tours would be redundant, they are not. We saw completely different things on both tours.

We had a great day on this tour. John, our tour guide, was excellent! This was a great way to get out of Edinburgh and see some of the countryside.
