What You Can Expect

West Highland Lochs and Castles Small Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Kilchurn Castle, Scotland

Your 10-hour tour of Scotland’s Highlands lochs and castles sets off from central Edinburgh in the morning. After meeting your friendly guide and boarding the coach, sit back for the journey from the city through the Lowlands.

Your first stop is at Stirling Castle, former residence of Scottish royals including Mary, Queen of Scots. Snap photos from outside and learn about the site’s colorful history riddled with battles such as the Battle of Stirling Bridge, led by the legendary William Wallace. Then continue to Doune Castle for another unique photo opportunity.
Aside from its historic importance as a critical medieval stronghold, Doune Castle has enjoyed more modern recognition as the film site for Monty Python and The Holy Grail and the TV series Outlanders, based on the books of Diana Gabaldon. Opt to visit the castle (own expense) or snap photos from outside and take a stroll around the surrounding area.
As your coach continues through dense forests and highland peaks, your expert guide will share fascinating true and fictitious tales about local figures like Rob Roy MacGregor — dubbed the ‘Scottish Robin Hood’ — who is buried in the Braes of Balquhidder.
Stop for lunch (own expense) en route to tranquil Loch Awe and the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle. Then continue toward Inveraray Castle on the shores of Lake Fyne, where you’ll have free time for an optional castle tour (own expense; tour runs from April to October only). Learn about battles that occurred in this region and rulers like King Robert the Bruce and Clan Campbell, who possessed the Argyll lands for centuries.
The final leg of you tour takes you through the Arrochar Alps and to Loch Lomond. Enjoy epic views of Scotland's largest lake from the charming town of Luss before returning to the capital.
Your full-day excursion ends near Waverly Bridge in the evening.

Even in December this tour was amazing, and you will have enough daylight to fully enjoy it. Our driver-guide, Grant, told us about Scotland history, the castles we saw and the lochs... He even told us a fairy tail!!

I will look to Rabbies tours again in my next trip, really nice experience.

Please go on this trip. I've done this exact trip two times and will do it again in the future. The castles are amazing and different!, the drive is beautiful, and the towns are quaint. It's a very relaxing and beautiful trip.

Another great tour by Viator! This trip took us on very winding and hilly roads so bring your dramamine as one poor lass got sick and decided to take the train back from Tyndrum. But the views are spectacular. Lots of stops for plenty of photo ops Inverary Castle, Kilchurn Castle, Scott's View, Tyndrum, Rest and Be Thankful Pass, etc It was a very long tour but very much worth it. Our guide, Heather, told great Scottish historical tales along the way that really added to the tour itself. You won't be disappointed!

It was me and my 15 year old son on this trip. We went on Halloween. The trees still had a little color so the trip was beautiful, if a little misty at times. Our guide was great and full of stories. I found it very relaxing to let someone else drive and just enjoy the scenery. I really liked the small bus concept. With only 16 people, it felt a little more like a private tour than a commercial tourist trap.

Enjoyed the day trip to the West Higlands. Our tour guide Jude was very knowledgeable and entertaining! Had enough time to see the castles (Doune, Kilchurn, Inveraray) and take in the beauty and history of the West Highlands. Highly recommended. Best to go in the Fall, with wonderful colours!

Out of the three tours taken in one week, this was the best. Our tour operator Graeme was the maestro who orchestrated the magic. His extensive knowledge, candor, and humor created a stage of pure delight. I felt the entire tour was a big party and everyone was included.
