Start with 7am pickup at your hotel in Manzini, and head to the Manzini market to try incwancwa, a traditional Swazi breakfast of fermented porridge. Following breakfast, you’ll have one hour to explore the market with your guide, and practice some words in the Swazi language—for the peak experience of the market, book this tour on Wednesdays or Thursdays, the busiest trading days of the week.
Leave the city behind on the one-hour drive to Kaphunga. Upon arrival in the village, visit a local grandmother’s hut to learn about Swazi culture and tradition: this is the perfect time to ask questions about local life. Try more local food with a classic Swazi lunch of beans, mealie bread, pap, and barbecued meats (vegetarian options are available with advanced notice). On days when the local school is in session, it may be possible to stop by and meet the students, or head to another local home to meet a Kaphunga family. Most people in the village speak little or no English, so this is the moment to break out your phrasebook, or use smiles and hand gestures.
Following your time in the village, follow trails into the hills on a one-hour hike, and enjoy free time to relax in the village before returning to Manzini. This 9-hour tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.
