1 star rating: I do not recommend this July 2017

This tour could have been a solid 5 star, but for the guide. For this reason, we give them 1 star. We took this tour on July 5, 2017. It was just me and my parents. We are originally from Romania, but I live in Toronto. All the other people involved, the truffle hunter and the winery staff, were amazing and really made us feel welcome. The scenery was wonderful, the food amazing and the history of the winery was presented in an engaging fashion. It is too bad that the guide spoiled it for all. We travelled all over the world and our guide was by far the worst we have ever had. The guide was not very talkative and we had to actually ask questions to get some information. Even the answers were short and he seemed really bored and jaded. After the tour, we actually thought he was just the driver, but we got home and checked the booking and it said professional guide included. On the way to the winery, he almost caused an accident because he did not give priority to a motorcyclist in a roundabout. The motorcyclist then kept driving parallel to us and our guide swerved the car towards him to make him go away. This was dangerous for all of us. When we got to the winery, we were left in the courtyard, without direction, while he went to talk to the staff and then sat down on a porch to relax. We did not know if we were supposed to follow and went there. Only then, we were invited to sit down. He was also using his cellphone a lot and not just for tour related issues. While we do not speak Italian, we understand it as Romanian is very similar to Italian. He even used his cellphone to browse it for pictures when we were having lunch, at the table. Extremely rude by any standards. He was also taking pictures with his own camera I trust that none were taken of me and my parents and none will be used for self-promotion. We were not asked for our consent and felt that this was double-dipping and cheap on their part. I don't think it is fair for us to pay so much money for their self-promotion purposes. It really cheapened the flavour of the tour. They should have done a tryout on their own and take pictures, not taking advantage in such a blatant fashion. The car was supposed to be air conditioned when we left the winery and the truffle hunting , the engine was only put on when we got into the car. In all the tours we took, the guide will go to the car before the guests and make the car ready, so that the car is already cool before the guests climb into it especially since my parents are more elderly and have a harder time dealing with heat. We were never asked by him during the tour if we had any questions, which is customary for all guides. We really felt like he thought we were not good enough for him to give us the attention we deserved. At the end we tipped him 20 Euros, in the hope that he will share it with the other staff. Again, this tour has an amazing potential and hopefully his review will be useful to make that happen. We would like to thank the other staff who saved the day for us. Cornelia.
