Enjoyed time with truffle hunting dogs and handler, interesting to learn the history. Best part of lunch was the truffle lasagna, the wine was average.

Interesting, but a HUSTLE

We were picked up and driven to the "farm" of this "family" winery. We met our truffle hunter, morena maronii, a charming man who probably really cares about his trade and his dogs. We heard an interesting lecture about truffles, and then we met the adorable dogs! The "forest" was a small yard of saplings, recently planted. The puppy did her thing and scratched up some truffles. After 15 minutes we were back at the building and soon abandoned. I assume from some shenanigans the truffles were reburied for the next "hunters". Whatever. We finally found someone who took us to the wine tasting. We were given some soup and a lasagne. The host was Lilo, a handsome charmer (think Tony Robins marries Chef Boyardi marries Bob Barker), A lot of wine was poured and Lilo tried to educate his visitors though most were just sloshed. Lilo insisted on calling me Princess. Hmm, it was cute but you know...he is a charmer. We never ate any truffles!!!!!! We were led wine by wine into the BIG SELL! The wine was good, but we have been bombarded with every marketing gig and gag known to man. As we wiated for our driver, busload after busload, strategically times rolled up, all expecting what I naively did....an authentic truffle hunt. It was Disneyland with good wine. And v. v. expensive.

we scheduled this tour on our arrival day. Airplane was to arrive at 1:30pm and tour was at 3:00pm. Should have been enough time to drop bags at hotel and hit the tour. Delayed plane put us in later than expected so we started about 4:30. Cold and rainy on this day so we opted out of the actual hunt. However we had a cozy room for cooking with truffles that they had on hand and fantastic wine. We were tickled to watch them cook, sip wine and learn about cooking techniques. Food was on point! A great first meal in Florence. Would do this tour again. The old village this was based out of was unbelievable and beautiful.

From when our driver Stephano picked us up, learning about truffle hunting and the brilliant dogs from Luigi and Luca in the Tuscan woods,to the amazingly delicious meal cooked by Simone in Certaldo, a charmingly quiet old Tuscan castle town, we had a wonderful day.

My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Italy. My wife absolutely wanted to go Truffle hunting. I was a little skeptical, but boy was this fantastic! It was just my wife and I. A driver picked us up at our hotel in Florence Hotel Spadai and drove us about an hour to Certaldo Alto. We met Simone and his dad Luigi and their 2 dogs. We then walked through the woods for about and hour or so - it wasn't hard or taxing - the dogs ran wild. Simone explained that it was white truffle season and they are a little harder to find. It wasn't too long before one of the dogs started digging. We all gathered around and sure enough, she dug up a truffle. We found 4 that day. Simone was very personable, friendly and engaging. A great guy. Once we had the truffles, we headed to the medieval city of Certaldo Alto. Simone owns a small shop called L'Ovo d'Oro The Golden Egg and it is awesome! The front of the store is a little market and the back is a small cooking / dining area. When we got there, Simone's wife was cooking up pumpkin soup - the fire was in the fireplace and the table was set for 2 - my wife and I. We spent the next 2 hours talking and laughing and eating. Simone and his wife cooked and served us. They cleaned and sliced the truffles we found and we ate them. It was spectacular! Simone and his wife are delightful. Just kind, sweet people. We connected with them on a personal level and that made the trip so much better. We ate SO much food and it was outstanding. This is a perfect and intimate experience. Truly, truly memory making for years and years - we will never forget it! She even wanted us to blow out a candle for our anniversary! Perfect, perfect, perfect!!!
