What You Can Expect

4-Day Tour from Frankfurt to Munich: Romantic Road, Rothenburg, Augsburg, Neuschwanstein Castle

St Ulrich Basilica, Augsburg

This 4-day tour begins in Frankfurt with a 2-hour drive south along the famous Romantic Road, a world-wide symbol of German romance, to the picturesque town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Rothenburg is widely believed to be the most well-preserved medieval old town in all of Germany.

Upon arrival, a taxi will transfer guests to Hotel Spitzweg (or a similar accommodation) for a check in. Then, in the afternoon or evening, join a city walk and follow the guide through the town’s winding, cobbled lanes. See the half-timbered houses, the Renaissance Town Hall and the almost fairy tale appearance of the majestic town gates that welcome Rothenburg’s many visitors from near and far. Alternatively, take a walk back in time with the Night Watchman tour of Rothenburg.

After breakfast the next day, embark on a 2-hour trip farther south, traveling again along Romantic Road to Augsburg, one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Germany. This former metropolis was famous for old trade dynasties during the Middle Ages. Explore Augsburg at leisure during the afternoon and evening, with InterCityHotel Augsburg (or similar) serving as the overnight accommodation.

After breakfast, start the third day of this trip with a city tour of Augsburg, departing from Augsburger Rathaus (City Hall). See some of Augsburg’s most popular attractions, like the Augsburg Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church founded in the 11th century, and the Fuggerei, the world's oldest social housing complex.

In the afternoon, board the coach for a 1.5-hour drive to Hohenschwangau. There will be free time to explore the city, followed by the final overnight stay of the tour at Hotel Müller (or similar).

In the morning, go to the hotel’s front desk to pick up tickets to explore the Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace. Visit the famous castle that was an inspiration to the Disney movie Sleeping Beauty. Conclude the tour with a return trip to Munich, the capital city of Bavaria and one of Germany’s most popular destinations.

This 4-day sightseeing tour ends around 7 p.m. in Munich.

This was a great tour. The only negative I have was the city tour in Augsburg. The tour guide was probably 80 years old and the tour was in German and English. He would speak about 10 minutes in German, and then one sentence in English. Otherwise, everything was really nice. The hotels were great. I would definitely do this again.

Hotels were good. Tour office at Frankfurt and one bus driver were less friendly. Another driver did not speak English and lazy, as a result we missed a bus station in Augsburg my wife and I had to walk a long distance to the Intercity Hotel at Central train station. On the next day departing Augsburg, bus was late 45 minutes I called Frankfurt tour office and bus driver was not happy that I called the office. Overall tour expenience was good. We are planning Canada Rockies and Alaska Cruise next year, do you have any proposals? Thanks.

Touring service staff was very rude and unhelpful. Driver was okay not too punctual though. The scenery was beautiful. Hotel was acceptable. Was surprised that the Augsburg tour was self guided tour instead of guided tour which was misrepresented on the website. Overall the tour was worth doing.

Most of the tour was great and highly recommend it to anyone wanting see the Romantic Road. Rothenburg and Neuschanstein castle portions were the highlights. Augsburg's self guided tour was only a one star - one of the hand held devices didn't work and we need up having to share. The directions given on the hand held devices was not always clear and it became frustrating as we weren't quite sure where we were supposed to be. Augsburg should be toured just not a self guided tour.

The 4 day romantic road tour was quite enjoyable. We particularly enjoyed the area around Ludwig's castle and the Hotel Meuller was very very nice. Didn't think much of Augsberg and wondered why we had to stay there at all when the time could have been better spent elsewhere. Really enjoyed Rothenberg and again the accommodation provided there was excellent. Commentary on the bus was a bit limited and could be improved a bit.

The tour is not worth the money they charge! There is no personal guide at many places.
Hotel was far from the place the bus drops you off. I was stuck with 2 luggage in a foreign country, not knowing where the hotel was. It was very disappointing! Customer service at the local tour company that Viator lines up with had extremely poor customer service. I will not recommend this tour to anyone. Please choose an alternative tour company.

Meh...this could have been SOOO much better, not because Germany doesn't have beautiful sights, but because the company, Tour and Touring, could have been much more efficient. I've taken many tours before and other companies really have their art down to a science. Not this one. First, I went to pick up my packet at their office as instructed before heading to the bus and the attendant, a Spanish lady, was extremely rude. She didn't acknowledge my presence when I introduced myself and then a few minutes later randomly took the voucher I had in my hand to grab my materials. The bus driver was annoyed when out of all that paperwork it's a decent amount they give you, I couldn't find the exact voucher he needed for me to board the bus. He took the package from me in exasperation no English and took what he needed. The tour guide was nice enough BUT: We only had a tour guide up until Rothenburg, THAT's IT!!! After Rothenburg for the next couple of days, you get a tape that the bus plays automatically when you enter a specific town. No personal touch whatsoever, like taking public transportation. Second, the tour guide was as tactless as they come. Most of the tourists on board were American and yet he made silly comments like how his favorite phrase was that This wasn't made in America and how Americans copied the German highway structure but you know they have more miles, but it has less quality, like for America. Are you Kidding? How old are we?? Rothenburg was beautiful, a must see and the driver in charge of our hotel transportation was extremely friendly and punctual. There are several stops between the main cities but they are all about 20 mins, barely enough to really see anything. And the Romantic Road gimmick is really just that, there's a lot of highway. Oh and there was an error on my pick up time in Augsburg which sent me scrambling an hour early. Don't do this tour, at least not with them You're better off just seeing the main sights on your own!
