Excellent tour, interesting cafes and restaurants. Sofia was a very knowledgeable guide and the places she took us to would not have been easily found by ourselves.

Thank you Sophia for a delightful day filled with wonderful food, wine and stories. It was the perfect way to start our visit to Madeira. Felt like meeting an old friend that couldn't wait to tell us about her beautiful home. Highly recommend and please go hungry!

Absolutely amazing, lovely small group of 10. A. fabulous taste of Madeira's traditional food and wine. Sophia was an excellent host but at the end of the tour she left too quickly without any of us being able to tip her! Although we had been in Madeira for 5 days when we took this tour Sophia was still able to show us some hidden places that we hadn't before encountered on our own. An absolute must-do tour.

Excellent tour led by Sophia, a multilingual and charming host with extensive local knowledge of the island. An opportunity to see the Funchal that you don't get the chance to see normally as a tourist. Whilst a little expensive, the tour is tremendous value for money and includes several wine tastings, local snacks, lunch, superb chocolates, cakes and biscuits etc. Please don't eat before you go as it's three hours or so of drinking and eating, with walking at a leisurely pace. Many thanks to Sophia.

Sophia the guide/story teller made this tour enchanting. We visited places we would never have been to and learnt so much about the food and drinks of Madeira. I've been back today to buy wine, cake and chocolate! I wish we were here on Wednesday to do Sophia's wine tour as well - next time we will!

Our local guide Sofia was exceptional. Her knowledge of the city and area was great and the places visited and food and drinks tasted were ideal. Would gladly recommend this tour to anyone having a few hours available in Funchal. We were there as a cruise ship stop and the timing and duration was perfect as a shore excursion.

Went on this tour yesterday and would absolutely recommend it. It might seem quite expensive but you get a lot from it. In fact a large quantity of food and drink, so best to have the lightest breakfast! All the food and wines are local specialties. Madeira wine and cake everyone knows about, but there was much more that we wouldn't have experienced without this. Plus places that we would never have gone to. Sofia, our guide, was fun as well as full of information. Definitely give it a go if you are in Funchal.

Our 2nd day in Funchal and what a perfect way for foodies to get to know both the Madeiran cuisine and Funchal. We were 8 amenable people in our group. The multilingual guide Sofia Maul was fantastic . She is an exceptional storyteller and her stories on the history of this enchanting island were humorous and educational. Her knowledge of the food and wine and other local drinks and her stories kept us enraptured all of the four hours of the tour. We ate lots of different foods, chocolates, biscuits aka cookies and tasted Maderian wines and potent poncha local rum and sugarcane drink. I especially enjoyed the Christmas long marinated pork, the non spicy precursor of Vindaloo at Venda da Donna Maria. We'll be back there for more local cuisine and Fado night. This is a party island and Christmas festivities starts around December 8th and continues long into January. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour with Sofia and Madeira in general.

We were part of a small group of six and met Sophia at the H and M Shop at the Infante Roundabout, so rendezvous was easy to achieve.
Sophia is an excellent guide and a font of information about Funchal, the island's history as well as a fascinating insight into her own family's past and achievements. The pace of the tour was slick but passed relaxed. You do not need to eat prior to going on this tour as the food provided is bountiful.

If you enjoy your wine, you will be in heaven on stop 2 where we enjoyed three different types of Madeira wine.

We were able to visit places in the Old Town one might not normally find and one where one might be a little scared to enter among the locals - especially the Bar where we witnessed the Poncha being made. The locals in the Bar were very pleasant and welcoming and obviously proud of their Poncha. It gave us an excellent insight to local life.

The lunch provided was excellent with a fine list of dried Tuna, wonderful pork done in a Vindaloo style with spices, not hot curry
and cubed potatoes, garlic bread and a few Beers.

The visit to the Sweet shops was again very interesting to see and taste handmade chocolates although I found this part the heaviest to
digest.

The Tour ended on a high note with us trying Scabbard fish, lightly fried in batter and served on a roll which was cut in half so don't worry if you think you have to eat a whole fish and then onto another bar/café/restaurant where we tried some mint tea, although they sometimes serve Fennel tea.

This was a most enjoyable and relaxed way of exploring Funchal in good company. The tour may seem a little on the expensive side, but I would strongly recommend it to anyone as it does offer good value for money and you will learn and experience more in three hours than you would over three days.

We followed this up with a ride on the teleferico to the Tropical gardens which certainly helped us work off the food we just had.

Overall, an excellent tour, very informative, relaxed and interesting together with some very good advice from Sophia about where to go and what to see 10 out of 10.

Sophia was a wonderful guide and shared lots of interesting things with us about the history and culture of Funchal. This tour provided a great variety of local fair, was not rushed, and the amount of walking was just right. I definitely recommend this tour.

When I booked this trip I thought it looked a little expensive but interesting. I was so wrong! It was a very well put together trip with guide Sofia who has excellent food and wine knowledge. We went to lots of really interesting places in Funchal which I'm convinced I would never have found. As for the expense I can now truly say that I think it represented incredible value for money. The variety of both food and drink and the quantity was amazing. Don't hesitate to book this if you get the chance, but if you have walking difficulties give it a miss.

We have previously been to the food and wine tours in Rome and Venice and once again we was not dissapointed, these tours give you such a insight to the local food, wine and people .Our tour guide Sofia was a local lady who was so enthusiastic about her island, she took us to 9 different places to eat and drink, the people were so friendly and made us very welcome except the man in the fish market We went back to some of them to eat and buy goodies to bring home. We have just booked another tour in Barcelona for when we go in June.Thankyou Sofia for giving us a really interesting insight into how local people spend time eating and drinking, we hope to come back.

This walking tour lasted from half 10 until about 2 in the afternoon with 9 stops. We were made to feel very welcome by all the local people we met. Our guide was brilliant. She had extensive knowledge of the island and we visited places we probably wouldn't have discovered on our own. The food and drink we tried was very varied - including local fish, biscuits and hand made chocolates and passion fruit soft drink, fennel tea, local white wine, Madeira wine and Poncha. We went back after the trip to buy chocolates to take back to our family. Definitely worth doing.

We really enjoyed this interesting and very informative tour. Our guide, Sophia, was very knowledgeable and passionate about Madeiran food, wine and culture. We only had a few days in Madeira and this tour helped us to learn a lot in a short time. Sophia grew up in Funchal and her family is well established here and she could talk from the heart of her personal experiences. She was very easy to get on with and has a great personality and sense of humour. We tried some fabulous foods and wines, a great range from sweet to savoury/sour! Also we went to some small shops, cafes and restaurants that we would never have found and got to learn about and enjoy traditions such as drinking poncha and eating nuts, throwing the shells on the floor! sampling the tasty traditional cakes and biscuits enjoying black scabbard tasting beautiful chocolates and drinking fine wines and fennel tea! For us it was the personal friendly touch and passion about Madeira that shone through including current topical Information such as Christmas celebrations that made it an enjoyable and memorable experience for us. We would highly recommend it and you can learn where some best kept secrets are then go back later and shop to your heart's content!
