What To Expect

This sightseeing tour of the Bavarian heartland and royal palace adventure begins in central Munich. Meet and greet the tour guide and hop on board the air-conditioned coach to Fussen Station.

To begin the tour, take a guided bike tour through the lush meadows and forests surrounding Hohenschwangau. Stop to see beautiful Lake Alpsee and visit Hohenschwangau Castle, a majestic Gothic palace that was the childhood home of King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

The highlight of the tour is a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace nestled on top of a rugged hill high above the village of Hohenschwangau, near Fussen, in southwest Bavaria. This stunning fairy tale palace was the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle and it’s one of the most popular of all the castles or palaces in Europe, drawing 1.4 million visitors each year.

The tour ends with a return trip to central Munich.

Note: It is recommended to purchase a ‘Bayern Ticket’ train ticket from Munich, which can be used for the return trip as well.

Look elsewhere to visit Neuschwanstein
Sarah_B, May 2023
Do not book this tour as the descriptions is inaccurate. We expected bikes and a tour guide to be provided based on the description. Instead, we were left having to pay additional for the use of bikes or take the bus. All you get is a ticket you have to pickup prior and then provide your own transportation to and from the castle. While they did provide us with tickets to the castle, this does not include a tour guide. The “tour guide” is the audio tour included with all tickets bought for Neuschwanstein castle and is included in the tickets directly purchased by the castle website. I recommend saving your money and booking directly on the Neuschwanstein website as they are the same tickets and much cheaper. To the tour owners: I highly recommend updating the description for this tour as it mentions bikes and other things not included in this purchase. I’m disappointed how expensive was for what we were provided. We were left disappointed by misinformation. We were told bikes were not included because they were not listed on the header, but if you read the description, it clearly lists the use of bikes and a guide. While we made the best of the experience and enjoyed Neuschwanstein, we left feeling like we overpaid and were misled by this booking. If we were to visit again we would book directly with the website and save a significant amount of money we lost through this experience.

I paid the double and I...

I paid the double and I have not any additional service, only the tickets. I have to look for them, the person who give me the tickets explain me that somebody in the castle will guide us, but it was not, no body guided us during the tour
Not recommending if it’s raining
Globetrotter313mck, Oct 2019
Unfortunately the day we visited the castle it was about to rain. All what we got was just been dropped at the bottom of the castle. The van we were taken was old. There was no refund or alternate option provided which I though was a Poor outcome. I have used Viator tours many times and this was unfortunately very disappointing.

Beautiful scenery and a fabulous host
Yvonne T, Sep 2019
My husband and I took the train to Fussen from Munich Central station. This was easy to do. Once we arrived we found it a bit of a challenge to find the meeting location (the hostel). However, we asked and were pointing in the right direction by friendly locals. We were greeted by Aga. She is just the loveliest person. She helped us get our bikes and rode with us to the bottom of the hill where you walk up to view the castle. We stopped a few times on the way so Aga could take pics of us and give us some information along the way. She had arranged tickets to the castle and explained exactly what we were to do. She then left us to explore on our own. When we were done exploring We rode back to the hostel and locked our bikes up and dropped the bike lock key back off. Aga was so great and she even gave us a great recommendation for dinner that night in Munich. Very attentive host! The castle views are spectacular and we were glad to experience hiking and biking in such a beautiful area. Thank you Yvonne and Dave
Wonderful, refreshing and beautiful!

We had a great tour! We choose our bikes and rode along this secret path to see both castles from this beautiful field! The castle ticket is included which was amazing as we didn’t wait in line. The bike trail was flat mostly and easy. Would definitely recommend this!
We had SUCH a great time on this tour...
Virgilia B, Sep 2018
We had SUCH a great time on this tour! Our hotel in Munich was right across the street from the Munich Hbf so that made it easy to hope on the 9:52 train to Fussen. Note, if you buy the Bayern ticket in advance, you don't need to additionally book tickets for that mornings trip, just select the date of the tour when you buy it and it's valid for travel on that date. You can ask at the information desk where to catch the train or check out the DB app. Back to the tour- so upon arriving in Fussen, we tried using the restroom at the station which made us late to meet our tour guide- head straight to the meet up point instead! The hostel where they specify to meet has restrooms you can use... So, when we finally found the meet up place a few minutes late, our guide was SO welcoming and understanding! She proceeded to get us situated with our bikes and explained the day's itinerary. We then rode our bikes as a group to the castle and along the way she took us to a few photo stops and she explained some history and geography of the area which was super helpful. Upon arriving in Schwangau, she provided us our tickets for the castle entry and gave us maps and some tips for catching the train back to Munich. We then got to explore on our own, which was actually quite nice. It was a quick bike ride back and super easy to do with her previous instructions. I 100 recommend this tour, you'll get much more out of the visit compared to just going to the castle on a bus tour, for example. I so enjoyed the view of the Alps and nearby villages during our bike ride.
Exciting adventure to the

Arriving at the meeting location was an adventure in of itself as the direct train was under reconstruction for the summer of 2018, but we eventually found our way using the recommended bayern ticket by asking the info desk at the DB desk to print us a schedule to arrive at Fussen. Once we arrived it took about 5-10 minutes to arrive at the actual bike rental location which was in the back parking lot of the House L.A-City hostel. From there it was smooth sailing as our tour guide took us the scenic route to the base of the castle and made suggestions for detours. Our exact tour time was 3:10 so we had approximately 1.5 hours to eat, hike up the mountain, and wait to arrive. We stopped for hot dogs before climbing to get to the top in ~20 minutes. An option for people who do not stop to eat would be to go directly to the top and go behind the castle to find the path to the bridge overlooking the castle for the best picture. We did this after the tour and greatly enjoyed it. The castle tour itself was well organized with an English speaking tour guide who explained each room in detail and there was a steady flow of groups. The king really liked swans and the castle was very ornate and well decorated. Highly recommend visiting this castle! After the castle, we biked back to the city and took our tour guides suggestion to go to the waterfall and Austrian border. This was a quick ~30-45 minute detour that was interesting, but definitely not necessary if you are in a rush. All-in-all, a great experience, and highly recommend others to buy this tour package.
This tour was one of the highlights...
Christy T, Aug 2017
This tour was one of the highlights of our trip. It was nice to take the train from Munich which allowed us to view the countryside. The bicycle tour was fantastic as they took time to show us around the town and area then left us to explore on our own. We rode our bicycles to the Neuschwanstein Castle area where we locked them up then headed up the hill to visit the Castle. Bicycling was very easy to do in this beautiful country area. The Town of Fuessen is quite quaint. I wish I could have stayed longer--the day went so fast.
Me and my partner went on this trip...
Jordan C, Nov 2016
Me and my partner went on this trip and it was a fantastic day! We arrived at Fussen train station from Munich and then walked to the meeting location. It turns out this trip runs from a small hostel, which surprised as at first, but we were welcomed, offered drinks and were then able to choose from a selections of different bikes. We did not have tickets to Neuschwanstein Castle, so the host tried to call the castle to reserve tickets but was not able to get hold of them. Another person who worked at the hostel said that he would try to contact them again while we were out on our bike ride. On this day, it was just me, my partner and the host, which meant it was nice and personal. We rode around different attractions and stopped multiple times with the host giving us information about what we could see. We stopped at a very lovely waterfall something you wouldn't get to see on a typical coach tour and then rode to the Austrian border. At this point, the other hostel worker met us at the border with the tickets for Neuschwanstein Castle. We felt that he went above and beyond as he had to drive to the castle to purchase the tickets and then drive to where we were on the bike ride to hand us the tickets, it was a very nice gesture. We then proceeded to ride to Neuschwanstein Castle, with many photo stops along the way. Once we arrived, the host gave us a map and directions on how to get back to the hostel. She then gave us a brief tour around the small village at the bottom of the castles and we said our goodbyes. We were told to return back to the hostel whenever we were ready, there was no specific time, this was great. There are two castles to visit but Neuschwanstein was the most spectacular. There are some great opportunities to take photos. The tour inside the castle lasted around 40 minutes, which plenty of information. There was some rain in the afternoon, but we purchased some ponchos and had great fun, especially riding back in the rain! Overall, we both thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The highlight was definitely the bike ride. It was such a great experience and you get to see a lot more than a usual coach trip. We would like to say thank you very much to the staff at the hostel for such a fantastic day! I would highly recommend this trip.
We really enjoyed the trip, but when...

We really enjoyed the trip, but when we arrived things were very disorganised and we couldn't helped but to get the feeling we were not expected. Once the trip started however, things run smoothly and we enjoyed it. For me, the highlight was the cycling :-
