I found this activity right before our trip, and we're so glad I did or we would've missed it completely.
Fabien has the only outrigger canoe on the island, an oc4 that seats 4 people, and offers both wave surfing and nature tours on Le Galion beach. Le Galion is on the French side of the island, in the nature reserve, and the beach is pristine and unspoiled. It's completely shelted by a stretch of land on both sides and a reef in the middle. Over that reef, you can usually find waves, and Fabien offers outrigger canoe surfing there.
We had an amazing time. Fabien was on time, he explained the paddling system with multiple passengers, and was a great guy to talk with.
The outrigger surfing is amazing once you get the hang of it, and the views of the island as you're out in the bay are just amazing. Thank god for the stricter construction rules on the French side, or this beach would've been filled with 10 story hotels like the Dutch side...
We split the 90 minute activity into surfing and a small sightseeing tour to the far end of the bay, where mangroves shelter juvenile fish amidst the entrance to an inland pond. The nature is just amazing, with the bay hosting turtles seagrass abounds, sharks harmless, beautiful, nurse sharks, iguanas, and tons of conchs and fishes.
Fabien brought his GoPro camera and we have some amazing footage of the surfing and sightseeing.
Highly, highly recommended. Don't sit in an airconditioned bus with 49 other tourists for some boring tour... do something awesome like this instead.
