Start your day with a Hong Kong or Kowloon hotel pickup between 7:30am and 8:15am. With your group together, you’ll travel by coach to the New Territories where the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree awaits. The large banyan tree is a popular among locals who burn incense and wish for safety and peace under its colorful branches.
After making a wish by the beloved tree, you’ll continue to Yuen Long Stadium where the Tin Hau Festival is underway. From your reserved seat, you’ll see a vibrant procession pass by; dragon dancing, acrobatics, music, and 'fa pau' floats (towers embellished with paper flowers) all form part of the experience, so have your camera on hand.
The festival celebrates the birthday of Tin Hau, a fisherman's daughter who was believed to be able to predict fearsome storms and save people from drowning in the sea. The fishing community made her their patron saint and honored deity, and today Tin Hau temples can be found in many fishing villages around southern China.
Stop for a traditional Chinese lunch at a local restaurant, then travel onward to Yuen Long, a bustling market town where fresh fish is sold. The town is also home to some of the largest Tin Hau celebrations in the Hong Kong area. Visit Tai Shu Ha to see its culture-rich Tin Hau temple decorated with extravagant flower wreathes.
From here, you’ll return to your hotel. The 8-hour day trip ends with a drop-off at your Hong Kong or Kowloon hotel at 5:30pm.
