Small-Group Historical Walking Tour of Hong Kong

Small-Group Historical Walking Tour of Hong Kong

The story of Hong Kong’s history is one best told in its streets. That’s because what was once a British outpost and later became part of the People’s Republic of China has a past that’s as rich and unique as its culture and people. Your small-group walking tour showcases all of the highlights.

You’ll pay a visit to Possession Point, where the British captured Hong Kong in 1841 before continuing along the shore to the Sheung Wan district. Your expert guide will recount the famous history of this area, as well as the Sun-Yat Sen trail as you learn about the founding father of China.

After digging into the past you’ll make your way to the present with a stop at the Central Business District. Ripe with towering skyscrapers and modern buildings this is the administrative hub of Hong Kong. As you wander the streets you’ll see Hong Kong’s first prison, the Victorian Prison Compound, as well as the Central police station and other key buildings.

Learn about the emerging artists who call Hong Kong home with a visit to the Fring Club—known for displaying contemporary and innovative work from young people. You’ll also see some of the neighborhood’s most popular landmarks like the Legislative Council building, the oldest Anglican church in Asia and the Court of Final Appeal Building.

See the European influence at Flagstaff House, where British architecture reigns supreme and get a taste of local politics at the Government’s Headquarters Complex overlooking Victoria Harbour.

Finally you and your fellow travelers will follow your guide to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on the Wan Chai waterfront, where your tour ends. Learn about the famed handover ceremony that took place on this sight in 1997 and see the well-known Blooming Bauhinia Sculpture before retuning to the center of the city.

Our tour guide was Danny, who spoke excellent English and was a wealth of information. My wife and I like to get an understanding of the history of the places we visit, and Danny did a great job with that. We visited many places that we would never have found ourselves - and were able to pepper Danny with questions on historical and contemporary issues. He had thoughtful and insightful responses to all of them. If you're interested in a deeper understanding of Hong Kong during your visit there, this tour is for you.

This historical walking tour with Danny Fung was the highlight of my trip to Hong Kong Island. We saw all the major sights on the island walking from Sheung Wan to the Central. District and then on to Admiralty. Danny's knowledge of Hong Kong and its history is incredibly detailed. He is well spoken. The price of the tour is a fraction of what another tour was requesting. I highly recommend this tour.

Very informative and interesting. Our guide pointed out things we would never have seen on our own. Prepare to do quite a bit of walking.

Danny was a very good guide. We saw quite a bit and got much more out of our visit to downtown Hong Kong than we could have done on our own. I would definitely recommend it.

Our walking tour with Danny Fung was excellent. Danny made our morning so interesting with his knowledge and understanding of Hong Kong history. I am 64 and my nephew is 19 and we both learned lots of fascinating facts and gained new insights into life in Hong Kong. We took other tours during our visit to China but Danny was, by far, our best tour guide. Our only regret is that we didn't have time to take more of Danny's various tours.

Very informative tour. The guide was very willing to answer questions. We saw and learned a lot. The only thing that would have improved the tour was if the guide had given us a map at the end showing where we had been during the tour. However, we were able to find many places later on a map because the guide was so clear in describing where we were when we were there. We highly recommend this tour.

Interesting tour ,well thought our.Danny was a great guide.
The tour takes you to many interesting places and you are able to appreciate the history ( of course the British period is the most obvious ).

This was a fantastic tour - our tour guide Danny was very knowledgeable and I learnt a lot about Hong Kong - and I had lived there for a few years! Hong Kong now feels different for me that I know more of the history. It was a 3 hour walk, so be sure to take water, snacks and good comfortable walking shoes. The day we went it was very hot as well so wear cool clothes and a hat if in the summer.
