Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Iasi (D)

When you arrive in Iasi by air or rail, you will be met and transferred to your comfortable hotel in the city. Check in and enjoy dinner this evening.

Overnight: 4-star Ramada or Unirea Hotel or similar

Day 2: Iasi – Bukovina – Suceava (B)

After breakfast, meet your informative guide and begin your scenic journey to the Bukovina area by air-conditioned vehicle. Admire the lush countryside as you journey deeper into northeastern Romania, where the Carpathian hills are laid with a mosaic of verdant pastures, forests and old villages.

As you travel, listen to tales of this untouched region of Europe and its one-of-a-kind monasteries, whose exteriors are covered in elaborate frescoes of religious scenes, saints and prophets, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Stop first at the UNESCO-listed Probota Monastery, founded in 1530 by Prince Petru Rares, and restored in the 1990s. Admire the murals on the exterior before marveling at the rich murals inside.

Having explored here, visit the Suceava Citadel, a 15th-century fortress and royal residence, and then stretch your legs around the neighboring Bukovina Village Museum, an outdoor park showcasing the folk architecture and crafts of Moldovia.

View the houses and workshops before continuing to the UNESCO-protected, 16th-century St George Monastery. Hear about the history of church, said to hold the relics of St John, and admire its stunning exterior frescoes, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament.

Later, check in to your hotel in Suceava and spend the evening as you wish.

Overnight: 4-star Daily Plaza or Balada Hotel or 3-star Gloria or Continental Hotel or similar

Day 3 Suceava (B, L)

Relax over breakfast at your hotel before enjoying a full-day tour of more of Bukovina’s monasteries, all easily accessible from Suceava.

Make your way first to the Arbore monastery, a picture-perfect church unusual for having no belfry. Hear about its history and building in 1503, and stroll around to see its delicate and detailed frescoes, many depicting scenes from Genesis.

After a stop to see the area’s traditional Marginea black ceramics being made at a pottery workshop, move on to Sucevita Monastery, a fortress-like complex famous for its large number of frescoes.

After admiring the stunning images here, view the lovely Moldovita Monastery, renowned for its predominantly gold and blue exterior paintings, and then continue to Voronet, the best-known of all Bukovina’s monasteries.

Marvel at the exceptionally vivid frescoes here, many in intense shades of blue, and note how they depict biblical stories, prayer scenes and philosopher portraits. Take them all in, and you’ll instantly understand why Voronets is sometimes called the ‘Sistine Chapel of the East.’

After a final stop at the Humor Monastery to see its frescoes and precious icons, return to Suceava for a hotel drop-off and the evening at leisure.

Overnight: 4-star Daily Plaza or Balada Hotel or 3-star Gloria or Continental Hotel or similar

Day 4: Departure from Suceava

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before transferring back to the airport or train station, bringing your tour to a close.
