What You Can Expect

Private Tour: Puncak Highland from Jakarta

Bogor Botanical Gardens

See a different side of life in the region near Jakarta as you get away for the day to the cool, misty hills of the Puncak Highlands on this private, guided 10-hour day trip. This lush region is home to a wealth of tea plantations, orchards and beautiful botanical gardens, making it the perfect urban getaway.

Start your day with pickup from your hotel a little before 7:30am (your operator will provide the exact schedule), continuing about an hour on the Jagorawi Highway for 37 miles (67km) south to the village of Bogor. Take the opportunity during your ride to relax and chat with your guide about the day’s plans in the Puncak Highland, an area famed as a holiday getaway for many locals.

As you approach this renowned area, you’ll notice a marked change in climate. The temperature will cool, and the altitude will increase as you reach 4,920 feet (1,500m) above sea level. You’ll also pass by fresh fruit vendors lining the winding roads leading into the region.

Make your first stop of the day at Bogor Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor), home to more than 3,500 species of plants and around 5,400 different tropical trees, all spread across the gardens’ more than 214 acres (87 hectares) of land. Wander the paved paths of the gardens with your guide, passing under secluded canopies of trees and enjoying the soothing sounds of a burbling stream within earshot. Make sure to visit the orchid house, home to more than 3,000 varieties of this beautiful flower. If you’re interested, your guide can also share details about the gardens’ 19th century origins, or explain the facility’s key horticultural areas of focus.

Leaving Bogor you’ll then head on a 30-minute climb towards Puncak Pass, driving through what appear to be never-ending fields of bright green tea plantations. Stop along the way at Gunung Mas Tea Plantation, where you’ll learn about Walini, a popular tea brand produced at the site. Take a walk around the grounds, meeting workers who help collect the farm’s tea leaves, and learn more about the tea brewing process. You can purchase tea or enjoy a pot of freshly brewed product at the on-site café.

End the day with a tasty Indonesian lunch at a local restaurant and then a drive back to Jakarta for drop-off at your hotel.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this tour. Our guide Shirley was a delight. Her English is superb and she was so very attentive. The description of the tour is very accurate. The highlands are so lush and the climate a welcome change. We were greeted at the botanical gardens by a private garden guide who was able to point out and explain things that I am sure we would have missed if we were walking around on our own. Shirley heard me say that I love and grow orchids, so she made sure that we were able to stop at the orchid exhibit before we left. So nice to see the local orchids as well as the hybrids. We were probably at the gardens about 2 hours. I did not feel rushed though there are other parts to the gardens that could be explored if interested. After the botanical gardens it was time to head up the highlands to the tea plantation region. Lunch was at a resort atop of the mountains. So relaxing and the food was very good. After lunch we went on to the tea plantation. The views were stunning. Upon arrival we made our way into the historical tea manufacturing facility. Tea production no longer takes place there but there is a tea tasting, small gift shop and a room dedicated to explaining the history and manufacturing process. We then made our way to the actual tea fields which are gracing the slopes of the highlands. Such a serene setting gazing out over acres of lush green. There is something very calming about tea and it starts right here in these highlands. Unfortunately it was time to head back to Jakarta. Our day ended up being a bit longer due to the notorious traffic in Jakarta on our return. Shirley filled the time with conversation about cultural and historical information and our driver exhibited a great amount of professionalism and patience.
