What You Can Expect

Juneau Shore Excursion: Whale-Watching Excursion

Whale Watching

Take advantage of your next port stop in Juneau and embark on a 2-hour whale-watching cruise. Board a bus to Auke Bay from the Mt Roberts Tramway. Upon arrival at the bay, step aboard a jet boat that accommodates a max of 30 passengers, meaning you’ll have space to enjoy unobstructed views. Thirsty or hungry? Soft drinks, water, hot chocolate and coffee are available, as well as snacks including locally caught Alaskan salmon spread on bagels.

Pick up some binoculars (provided), as your captain navigates the boat into Saginaw Channel, Stephens Passage, Favorite Channel and Lynn Canal. Thanks to the growing whale population in Juneau, rest assured you’ll see whales in these waters. Keep your eyes peeled for breaching whales, females with their young and pods on the search for prey. Your naturalist guide on board shares facts about the local geology and the wildlife you see, including bald eagles and seal lions.

At the end of the cruise, transport takes you back to the Mt Roberts Tramway.

Worry-free Shore Excursion:

The two naturalists on board were very informative. At times, it can be hard to hear when speeding across the water, but ask them to repeat it and they will do so. They are also very available to answer any question and never feel like any question is a dumb question. As with any whale watching, there is no guarantee of seeing whales, but we did see 6 whales and 1 orca called Old Jack. We never saw them breach, but they did break the water and we saw them shoot water out several times. The guides know the whales by name. I recommend the boat -- nice seating indoors with large windows, a restroom, snacks salmon on bagels, hot chocolate, coffee, soda and two outdoor viewing areas: main level in back of boat and on top which can hold 12 people at a time. If it's raining, you will want rain gear. If it's not, you may wish to have a good windbreaker.

My family including my 12-year old son highly recommend this tour. It started out as a grey and drizzly day but that didnt stop us from seeing 11 whales. It cleared up and we got even better pictures. Our captain was fantastic and was able to continually find spots where the whales were coming up out of the water. I managed to get 2 tail pics. I would recommend that if you have a Go-Pro that you use it. My husband wore ours the entire time and everything he saw, we have captured.

Great experience. We saw lots of whales Captain had an instinct for being in the right place. What's more, the cost was around half the cost of the overpriced ship tour that couldn't have been better.

The whale watching excursion was wonderful! I learn some interesting information from our guide as we searched for the whales. Our driver knew just where to go to find the feeding whales. What a spectacular sight to see a whale come up out of the water and then dive back down! Loved the whole adventure!

We had an amazing time! Captain John and our naturalist Olivia were great at getting us many great sightings as well as a lot of great information. The price was much lower than the cruise ship offered. I would definitely recommend it.

Excellent tour. Very knowledgeable captain and staff. We saw a bunch of whales....even before leaving the harbor! We didn't see any fins or whales jumping out of the water. We did see them feeding at the surface and their throats expand, which I thought was pretty cool. We saw seals and eagles as well. Overall a beautiful day and a wonderful spot for viewing,

Great excursion at half the cost that the cruise ships charge with the same guarantees. Our boat's captain, Captain John and his helper, Olivia, did a great job of showing us a good time. The boat is small, so you don't have to fight the crowd to get to the edge of the boat to get a good look at the whales. Captn. John did his best to get us as close to the whales as possible. We spotted about 5 Humpback whales and even got to see one do 'the tail thing'! There's a clean restroom onboard and they served water, hot chocolate and a very tasty little salmon sandwich for light snacks. We were allowed to go up on the bow and the back of the boat when we stopped to watch the whales which gave us a good place for viewing. The boat also had big windows that you can open if you choose not to go out on the bow or the back of the boat to view. We docked right down town and so it was easy to find the excursion. They have a YELLOW sign with BLUE lettering. The driver who drove us out to the excursion was so informative. He told us a lot of history and about sights and things around Juneau. He was even kind enough to let us out at the Red Dog Saloon on the way back to the port so that we could walk from there back to our ship instead of having to go back to port and then walk all the way back. We had a great time and the Price was reasonable.

We saw at least a dozen whales, breaching, bubble netting, and tail waving. Our guide, Sean, was the best.
