I would have had the option to cancel the same day because of the rain. We only saw a couple of whale fins, but nothing else. The rain meant pictures came out terrible. Also I didn’t feel like we got close enough to the whales we did see.

Excellent Tour

The captain of the ship and the naturalist were exceedingly knowledgeable friendly and very approachable. They could not have been nicer. We had an excellent experience with over 21 whale sightings - however some were the same whales. It was most enjoyable and delivered everything that Viators promised. The usual dependable reliable and excellent tour.

Whales were far away
CindyHolmstrom
, Jul 2022
I was very disappointed that we did not see any whales up close. All whale sightings were from very far away, only visible with binoculars.
Response from Host , Jul 2022
Cindy,
We are required by law to stay 100 yards away from the whales. This is for wildlife protection and is enforced by the government agency NOAA. Though we understand you would want to get closer, this is not allowed. Sometimes the whales come to the boats, but we cannot control that.

Disappointed
Peggy_W
, Jul 2022
Although the whales were doing bubble net feeding and we heard about rare it was to see ,the boat never got closer than a quarter of a mile. Other boats much much closer. On the way back did see one whale up close. Very disappointing. The guide did a great job, very knowledgeable.
Response from Host , Jul 2022
Peggy,
There are regulations established by NOAA to keep a safe distance from the whales to not harm wildlife. We strictly adhere to these regulations for the safety of the whales. Not doing so would be irresponsible and damaging to wildlife. All other tour companies do the same as this is a highly regulated industry. Sometimes the whales pop up next to boats. This cannot be controlled as they are wildlife. We are not allowed to go closer to whales. We are sorry you were disappointed by this experience, however, please note we are operating a safe and responsible business by not endangering the whales.

Whale watching in Juneau

We had an amazing tour with Stephanie, Sarah, and Kristen of Alaska Tales in Juneau. They took us to an area where the whales were bubble feeding, which is a rare occurrence. We saw over a dozen whales and really had an incredible time. Highly recommend this tour group for whale watching!!

We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.

Sorting, ranking, and search results
Viator wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That’s why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.
On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You’ll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.
You’ll see some experiences with a “Promoted” badge, which means that the operators of those experiences have agreed to pay Viator more to have their experience highlighted.
If you see an Experience Award Winner label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Viator over a 12-month period.
The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We’re always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.
