Glacier and Canoe-Woo Hoo!
Lori_E
, Jun 2022
I thought that paddling a canoe would be a lot hard than it was. Yay! Our guides were great! They knew so much, and they were very helpful! I can't remember their names, but he had an unusual name(very cool, but I forgot it) and a ponytail. I think her name was Lena. The lake was beautiful. We got to see some small icebergs. We got to walk on different areas of the glacier. We saw black ice, the blue-ish white ice, and even underneath the glacier. There weren't any ice caves, but it was so much nicer up close than I thought it would be. Go out, paddle a canoe with a bunch of other people, and climb on an actual glacier!

Best way to spend your day in Juneau !

We had an amazing afternoon paddling to then exploring the Mendenhall glacier in Juneau. While many people view the glacier from the visitor centre far away we were lucky to be part of the few people who got to experience it up close and personal! Our two guides (Bryce and Mike) were fun and professional and they took care of everything we could need from rain gear to rubber boots to hot drinks at the end of the tour! We paddled all together in a big canoe to get to the glacier and got to see a black bear who followed us along the shoreline. We also did a rugged hike through running water and rocky shores to get to the glacier where we took some amazing photos. After paddling back all together we got to drink hot coffee and cocoa and then get transported back to downtown Juneau. Overall this was a unique and incredible (active) experience which I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Juneau. You won’t find a better activity to do there!

Best way to spend an afternoon in Juneau!

We booked this tour for the one day we were visiting Juneau and it was the best decision! Mike and Bryce were our tour leaders and they made sure we had an amazing, fun and unique adventure. We got up close to the glacier (not just view it from miles away like most visitors in any way) after paddling and hiking our way there. This is an active tour but really worth every step! Despite the rainy weather we had a great time and even got to sight a black bear along the coast while canoeing to the glacier. I would highly recommend this activity and this tour group as they were extremely professional and took care of every need. We even got served hot drinks at the end when we got back to the van !

We arrived and your was cancelled. We understand why but it was very unfortunate because it was the only excursion we booked. We weren’t offered any alternatives.
Response from Host , May 2022
Thank you for your comments and we are deeply sorry that your tour was canceled. We understand your frustration and we never wish to cancel any tours, however our number 1 guiding principle is the safety of our guests.
As a wilderness adventure tour company, we operate within a natural environment that is subject to weather conditions. Unfortunately, the clear sunny skies during your visit in Juneau caused high temperatures that created very strong winds, causing unsafe lake paddling conditions. All these weather factors led to the tour cancelation in order to prevent placing any guest in harm’s way. This affected all our tours on that date and therefore we were unable to offer any alternatives for your group.
Poor reviews have a dramatically negative impact on small businesses like ours, and we hope you better understand the difficult decision we were forced to make. We welcome you to contact us directly at 800-892-5504 or at info@liquidalaskatours.com to discuss your experience further.

For starters,
Ask for Paul and Bryce to be your guides. After that enjoy the trip, to be able to walk to and on a glacier is a once in a lifetime experience. The blue ice is real, to be able to look down into a crevasse is an experience. Seeing the big chunks of ice that fall off and paddling by them makes you realize how big this all is.

I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone looking to see Mendenhall! Canoeing 2.5 miles each way is no joke but Baxter & Jason made it so much fun. This tour, unlike the others out on the water, gets you right up to the glacier for a unmatched hiking experience.
We had a crew of 9 total, mostly adults and one preteen. While the stormy day didn't help our paddling, it did bring out the vibrant blues in the ice. Baxter was full of fun facts from start to finish and was an expert navigator on a terrain that is rapidly changing. We were able to have the surreal experience of going underneath a portion of the glacier. It was easy to trust that both guides had good discretion for what we could manage while staying safe.
You're equip with a jacket, rain pants, rain boots, canoeing gloves, a life vest, dry bags (with snack in them!) and a helmet for the hike. Baxter & Jason were nice enough to offer to take photos throughout the duration. Took us right around the 5.5 hour mark to wrap up. Ended with delicious hot drinks and Jason kindly drew up a quick map for hiking recommendations around town the next day!

I highly recommend this trip! Casey and Andrew were awesome! They were very professional all while making us laugh and have a great time. As we paddled across the beautiful lake, Casey and Andrew talked alot about the surrounding area and shared history and local stories. The hike and the views were amazing. Going into a ice cave was incredibly beautiful and one for the bucket list! Take this trip and hope you get Casey and Andrew, I promise you'll laugh and have an amazing time!

Amazing! Even though we didn’t get to walk on the glacier, Andrew and Mario made sure we received the best possible experience. The canoe trip across the lake provided unique views of the glacier prior to getting as close as possible with the hike. The guides very extremely knowledgeable and provided great perspective on the ever-changing landscape. A must-do activity in Juneau.

Something to be improved

My tour was canceled due to a flood and was informed around 6:20AM the same morning. I understand that bad weather can ruin any trip; however, 6:20AM was a little too late for us to switch to a different tour. My recommendation: if a disclaimer can be added to warn people before booking, it will be great.
Response from Host , Aug 2021
Thank you for your feedback. While we strive to provide our guests with information as much in advance as possible, we were unable to predict the very rare flash flooding that caused the closure of the national park and the cancelation of your experience with us. We contacted all guests once we became aware of the flooding, and hope you will find some understanding in the predicament nature caused. If you have any further information to provide, please contact us directly. It would also be appreciated to fairly rate your experience with us, which we believe far exceeds the 2 stars you have unfairly offered.

Incredible Excursion!

My original tour was cancelled due to the weather in Juneau. But Jason, the manager was extremely communicative in helping to reschedule as the day went on. I’m so glad we were able to head out. It was an incredible day. Mario and Ryan, the guides, were so fun and helpful. The canoeing was harder than anticipated, but frequent breaks, lots of laughs, and getting some songs going made the trip there and back a blast. We were able to see so much, and a lot of that was because of Mario and Ryan’s ability to find the best viewing spots. Would recommend this trip to anyone visiting Juneau—unique, beautiful, and fun.

Great Trip with Great Guides

Had a great trip! Because of the recent rain, the glacier was not safe to walk on. That said, the tour operator was very clear up front of the change in our plans and allowed us to cancel if we wanted to. I’m definitely glad we didn’t! Rather than climbing on the glacier we took a trek around the glacier. Really enjoyed the experience and it was made better by the guides: Ryan and Casey. Both were fantastic.

We visited Juneau during our Alaskan cruise and booked our tour several weeks ahead of our visit. The booking process was simple and we had no problems finding our meeting site.
The tour was amazing! Both Mario and Ryan, our guides, made sure we had a memorable experience. The glacier's landscape was stunning and the canoe trip provided such a unique and beautiful perspective of Mendenhall lake and the glacier.
My husband and I both loved the tour - it was one of the coolest things we've ever done!
Thanks Mario and Ryan!

This was a awesome experience! I’m sure made better because of our guides Andrew and Mario. They did a great job making me feel safe and comfortable. Their expertise showed!
Walking on the glacier and seeing how the glacier looks and evolves daily was the best! But truly the entire 5.5 hours was fact and fun filled adventure! Will be talking about it and recommending to others!! Thanks!

Incredible adventure
Eamon_O
, Jul 2021
Though our guides, Ryan and Casey, had nothing to do with the amazing weather, they took advantage of it by adding interesting talking points about geology that normally can’t be seen due to clouds. There was no requirement to prove you were capable to competently use an oar, but Ryan didn’t let anyone slack off, and we reached the glacier with moderate effort. Without Ryan’s firm, yet understanding, instructions, I’m sure some of my fellow travelers would have overturned our canoe. Casey was full of knowledge about this glacier, and glaciers in general, and topped it off by being a fantastic photographer. The trip would have been great, but Ryan and Casey made it incredible.
