Get back to nature with a 3- or 7-hour hike on Yakushima island. With a local guide, you’ll walk through the ancient forest of Shiratani-Unsuikyo. Known for its mossy and mystical landscape, the forest is home to many walking trails that allow you to take in its natural beauty. If you’re feeling energetic, plan a 7-hour walk up to the Taiko-Iwa rock and admire views over the island. Numbers are limited to just four people.
With your walking shoes and waterproof jacket on, you’ll start your tour with a hotel pickup from the Isso or Kurio areas. Pickup times are from 8:30am to 9:30am.
Meet your guide, and plan the route you want to take for your walk through Shiratani-Unsuikyo forest. How long you walk for is up to you; the preplanned routes last between three and seven hours.
Perhaps take a 3-hour walk, and head into the mossy forest for a leisurely paced, back-to-nature experience.
If you want a full day of walking, then trek over the foothills to Taiko-Iwa and back. The rocky ledge sits at the top of a steep climb, but the views from the top make the effort worthwhile. Soak up sweeping views of the green valley and, on a clear day, admire Yakushima’s tallest peaks in the distance.
Detour with a longer route through the forest, if you wish, or ask your guide to suggest other walks that are free from the crowds. Lunch is provided half-way through the tour.
When you return to the start point, hop inside your waiting transport. Your day then finishes with a hotel drop-off back in Isso or Kurio.
