Meet your guide at your Nairobi hotel for an early morning departure to Lake Nakuru, a 2.5-hour drive that is considered one of the most scenic in Kenya. Get sweeping views of a landscape that alternates between woodland, grassland and marsh broken by rocky outcroppings and cliffs.
Watch for birds and big game on a viewing drive that takes in the shoreline and surrounding landscape of Lake Nakuru park, which is surrounded by acacia and euphorbia forests. Fifty-six species of mammals thrive in this small national park including white rhino, waterbuck, and warthogs. Masai lions, cheetahs, and leopards stalk the area, and great pythons can be seen dangling from trees at the edge of the forest.
The most striking image of Lake Nakuru, though, is the staggering population of flamingos that cluster in the warm water of the lake, feeding on blue-green algae. Other birds include the distinctive African fish eagle, Verreaux’s eagle and the Goliath heron, the largest heron in the world. After a day of exploring the park, set out for Nairobi between 3pm and 4pm, then finish the day with drop-off at your Nairobi hotel between 6pm and 7pm.

My guide, John, was great. He did a great job at spotting and explaining the animals and their behaviors. It was apparent that he enjoys animals and had a keen interest in their history. This is a full day tour, expect 3 hours drive each way. We stopped at a lodge inside the park for lunch which had a really nice view and area to sit/relax.
