Ketchikan Shore Excursion: Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary Walking Tour

Bald Eagle

Spend your time in port in Ketchikan discovering the wilderness of the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary on an easygoing, small-group walking shore excursion. You’ll return to your ship with a new appreciation of Alaska’s diverse ecosystem and the many plants and animals that depend on it.

Stroll past cedar and spruce trees, note the bright moss and flowers of this forest and listen to your guide share the history and significance of the sanctuary.

Pass by a protected estuary and follow Eagle Creek to a boardwalk providing views of wetlands. Thousands of salmon return to this location during spawning season, as well as the wildlife supported by the salmon population. Keep watch for bald eagles, bears and seals that frequent the region.

At the end of the half-mile trail, you can choose to visit the Alaska Raptor Center and experience up-close views of the local wildlife.

Your pleasant hike makes a final stop at the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill. See a master totem pole carver in action, discover the interpretive displays and enjoy snacks before being transported back to Ketchikan port.

This is a relatively short tour to do, so leaves time to do other things in Ketchikan. I really liked Ketchikan so this worked out great for us. You meet up as a very small group with a ranger with this trip. There were a couple of really big groups there so we were lucky with the size of our tour. It gives you more opportunity to ask questions and hear everything being said. The rangers are very enthusiastic and it rubs off. It's surprising the little facts you find yourself reciting over meals for the next few days after this trip.

During June/July you should be able to see bears too. The salmon swim through the river which goes through this forest. We arrived in May just as they were coming out of hibernation. A group behind us did see a bear, but we were unlucky. We saw plenty of Bald Eagles though.

At the end of the tour we got to meet the Totem pole Craftsman, Wayne. He was so patient, both him and his wife, as we all had so many questions. He was showing us some of the tools he uses and explains how he gets his ideas and makes his totem poles.

Ketchikan has quite a lot in it we wanted to see and do, so this tour worked out perfectly for us and the rainforest walk was on paths/boadwalks, so would suit most people.

Guide was excellent- had a great fund of knowledge. Great way to view the rain forest. Saw black bears catching salmon, a highlight of our cruise. I wholeheartedly recommend this excursion.

I enjoyed it very much! The bulk of the tour was about the trees and plants of the rainforest. We did see a black bear on the tour and several juvenile eagles. At the end, there are 4 injured birds of pray in a cage. For such a short port of call, this was wonderful.
