Ketchikan Shore Excursion: Misty Fjords National Monument Floatplane Tour

Misty Fjords

Meet your pilot at the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau across from the port, and climb aboard your six-passenger floatplane. During the flight, your pilot shares commentary via your headset, which also offers a musical soundtrack.

Ascend over Tongass Narrows, a body of water located between Ketchikan and Gravina Island, and fly past Ketchikan. Stare in wonder at the beauty of Tongass National Forest as you soar over Revillagigedo Island to Misty Fjords National Monument, about 40 miles (64 km) east of town.

Traveling through a low-hanging mist that gives the region its name, take in views of fjords, cliffs and rock walls jutting straight out of the water. Waterfalls cascade down narrow granite passages, and dense forests of hemlock and spruce cover the vertical slopes.

Your pilot navigates over Rudyard Bay, giving you a fantastic vantage point of New Eddystone Rock, a remnant of early volcanic activity. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like wolves, bears, deer and eagles.

Then, get ready as your pilot makes a smooth but exciting landing on one of the fjords or lakes (depending on weather conditions). Step out onto a pontoon right in the heart of the wilderness, and soak up the scenery.

Your 2-hour floatplane tour ends with drop-off back in Ketchikan.

This was one of the highlights of our two-week vacation. We were on an 8-seater seaplane and my husband got to sit in the co-pilot seat and was thrilled. The company was very professional and the pilot was very knowledgeable about the Ketchikan area. We landed on a lake in the middle of the wilderness. Altogether we were in the air about an hour. We booked the tour only two days prior to the excursion date. In the end, we had a difficult time confirming the trip and learning where our exact meet-up place was. Taquan Air never picked up the phone and I ended up having to google them to find another phone number. This was my only complaint. They need to better communicate with Viator or update their information with Viator. Otherwise this was great and cost a lot less than a similar trip offerred by the cruise ship.

Landing on the lake was amazing! A great way to be introduced to the vastness of Alaska. Personally I would prefer more discussion from the pilot rather than taped music.
