Do as the tourists of bygone years did, and explore Killarney by horse and carriage. The equivalent to a modern taxi, the jaunting car was popular in Ireland through the 19th and early 20th centuries. On a 1-hour tour, you’ll learn about the area’s history, hearing tales of the Gaelic chieftains as you ride around Killarney National Park. Ross Castle, Deenagh Lodge, and Killarney Lodge are a few of the landmarks on the route.
Head to the Malton Hotel in Killarney for your hour-long jaunting car tour. Several departure times run through the day, so just turn up at a time that suits your schedule.
Once on board, you’ll travel past St. Mary’s Cathedral, a delightful thatched cottage, and Killarney House and Gardens. Head into Killarney National Park, and travel at a relaxed pace through countryside where the modern-day traffic can’t reach.
As you go, keep an eye out for red deer; the deer park is home to the country’s last native herd. Gaze out at the lake against a backdrop of distant mountains, and see if you can make out Carrauntoohil, one of Ireland's tallest peaks.
Hear tales from your carriage driver as you pass Ross Castle, a 15th-century tower house. Owned by O’Donoghue Mor, the castle was the last to be defeated by Oliver Cromwell and the English in 1652. Stop for photos, then return to the start point in Killarney.
Very good tour and funny tour guide and very informative. No rushing had a great time
Michael was terrific. We enjoyed his stories and patience as we snapped photos.
We LOVED our Jaunting Car tour. Our driver wish I could remember his name! was the absolute best a very warm and welcoming young man, knowledgeable, a great driver, and answered all our questions with humor and grace - after hearing them all, I'm sure, hundreds of times before. We were treated to some of the most peaceful, beautiful views we've seen anywhere in the world, accompanied by the soothing clip clop of horse hooves. We learned a lot of facts and history in the best, most fun way imaginable. The Jaunting Cars are a MUST DO in Killarney. You won't find a more enjoyable, relaxing, rejuvenating break for your over used vacation feet or your over stressed vacation psyche than this. Honestly, all 4 of us from 12-64 years old agreed the Jaunting Car was top notch!!
We were on our way from Blarney to Dingle and stopped in Killarney for lunch and this lovely ride into the park. Our Grandaughter got to hold the reins as we drove through the park to Ross Castle. There was time for us to make a quick tour of the castle and get a few pictures before heading back through the lovely woods. We saw some of the deer too. We all enjoyed the lovely time with our driver who was very entertaining and of course we had to give thanks to Jack who pulled us all the way. We had lunch at the Moltron Hotel believe that is the spelling which was very nice and the cart was waiting just outside when we were ready. Parking behind the hotel very convenient.
After we realized we would not make this tour in time, we called our local contact, who was most helpful in rescheduling! We enjoyed a lovely ride through the Killarney National Park with Anthony, our guide, and Tommy, our delightful horse! So glad this was not your typical downtown horse-drawn carriage. We enjoyed the natural setting of this ride and and loved Ross Castle, where our ride visited.
Neat trip through the park and nice to be able to stop at Ross Castle. Booked this the day before as a spur of the moment thing and Viator as usual came through with flying colors!!
Fun, I would highly recommend this tour. We had a wonderful driver, Paul, that has lived in Killarney all his life and he was very knowledgeable and told us interesting facts during our trip through Killarney and the Killarney National Park. Beautiful views of wildlife and Ross castle. A favorite part of our trip to Oreland.
Absolutely charming! Loved our tour guide, he was full of information on what to do and where to eat in town.

Our jaunting car tour was fabulous except it only last approximately 40 minutes and not the full hour. We actually walked to where a number of the jaunting cars were and some phone calls had to be made to make sure we were on the schedule as we originally were to go the day before but when I called they informed me that there was no issue with doing the next day for which we were grateful.
I really enjoyed the experience and Donal and Oscar the horse! were really professional and pleasant.
However when I arrived at the location where all the jarveys were gathered at the square they proceeded to tell me that I had been vastly overcharged as they only charged 40 their trips would include a booking fee as well so prob not cheaper in reality. And they immediately told me it wasnt their company I had booked with and walked away. Eventually another driver realised it was a guy he knew that we had booked with and made a call and he came and got us that was act my mistake as he was waiting for us at another location. It made me feel a little small that I was seemingly overcharged and that everyone was telling me what I should have done but nobody really had advice on what to do at that moment. I can only imagine if there was a language barrier how stressful it would be. So the fact that the other company seem to believe their service is a better quality they were warning me to make sure I was brought around the lake shore in case I got stiffedand cheaper, made me worry that I had somehow been hoodwinked. It put a damper on the experience initially. I must stress that I really enjoyed it and would recommend the trip but it might do well if there wasnt so much aggravation at the start.
