Meet your driver during afternoon pickup at your Kraków hotel in an air-conditioned coach (select hotels only) or the closest departure point, and travel a little more than 1 hour to reach the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. Preserved as a lasting memento of the Holocaust, the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp was in operation from 1940 to 1945 and facilitated the murder of an estimated 1 million or more Jews and other groups targeted by the Third Reich. Along the way, watch a documentary film about Auschwitz, including footage of the camp’s eventual liberation by Soviet forces
Upon arrival at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, embark on a guided group tour of Auschwitz I, the one-time Nazi SS administrative center, and the Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp. On this sobering walk through history, listen to English narration while visiting sites including the wooden barracks where prisoners were kept, ruins of gas chambers and crematoria, and the original roads and fences that surrounded the camp.
During the 3.5-hour tour, learn about the origins, evolution, and horrific functions of Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau from your guide. There will be a 15-minute break between the two sites. At the end of your visit, ride the coach back to Kraków, where the tour concludes at your original departure point.
