Overview

Experience the traditions of Japan at a tea ceremony in Kyoto and learn the origins of this ancient practice. Choose from one of two different tea ceremony options—one is hosted in a machiya (typical wooden house) and the other ceremony is complete with kimono dress. Your ceremony includes a guide, who provides translation.
  • Private tea ceremony with option for kimono lesson or tea ceremony in a private Kyoto home
  • Learn the correct way to wear a kimono and try one on yourself (if option chosen)
  • Understand the meaning behind the ritualized art of preparing and serving tea
  • Ask questions of the tea master with the guide there to translate for you

Returns to original departure point
Explore the lineage of ancient Japan during this excursion offering two different tea ceremonies in the legendary city of Kyoto. Depending on the experience you select, you have the chance to enjoy a typical ceremony and try on a Japanese kimono.

Over the course of your ceremony experience, witness the methodical steps behind Japanese tea preparation. Receive a lesson in the proper sitting posture, and then observe your instructor as they prepare the tea from matcha, a powdered tea mixture used since the 12th century when the Japanese monk named Eisai introduced the mixture from China.

When your brew is ready, enjoy the delicate nuances of its earthy flavor, and sample a sweet snack that is typically consumed alongside the drink. You also have the chance to get an in-depth lesson on the correct preparation of this celebrated drink, a refreshment that is half meditation, half performance art.

Highly recommended experience in Kyoto. The lady doing the ceremony was so graceful and elegant. She walked us through each step of the ceremony explaining what she was doing and the symbolism of it. Incredibly interesting experience.

We chose the option to get dressed in a kimono and have our photos taken before the ceremony. The ladies who dressed us and took the photos were friendly and helpful and explained everything as we went along. We then had the tea ceremony which was very special. Again, each stage of the ceremony was explained and it was extremely memorable. I would certainly recommend this.

This was one of the highlights of our Kyoto trip. My 10 year old daughter loved wearing a Kimono! It felt like we were invited to someone's house in Kyoto who explained the history and meaning behind all parts of the tea ceremony complete with the opportunity to try making matcha. Highly recommend it.

My husband and I absolutely loved this tour. We first dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos and took beautiful photos in the traditional Japanese home and garden. This was followed by an in depth traditional Japanese tea ceremony that was beautifully explained and presented. Thank you for a special morning.
