Itinerary
Stop At:
Gion Hatanaka, Kyoto Cuisine and Maiko Evening
In the evening, make your way to Gion Hatanaka, located in the city’s renowned district of the geisha (called geiko in Kyoto). Upon arrival, you’re greeted in the open banquet room before the 2-hour dinner show begins. Settle in at your table and admire the elegance before you as apprentice geiko, known as maiko, perform traditional music and dance — a unique experience that is still a rarity for foreigners in Japan. Listen as your host explains the cultural significance of each dance during this interactive and intimate dining experience. Your traditional, kaiseki-style dinner is prepared by a highly trained chef, who uses special skills and cooking methods to create select food artfully arranged to balance taste and texture. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are used in ways that enhance the flavor of dishes, which typically include an appetizer and sashimi in addition to a simmered, a grilled and a steamed course with Japanese seasonings such as soy sauce, fish stock and mirin, or sweet sake. Take the opportunity to converse with the maiko while they entertain you with traditional Japanese arts. You’re even invited to play a few fun drinking games during the informal evening, which includes unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages with your multicourse meal. Great evening out.

My brother and I had a great evening at Gion Hatanaka. This is an excellent way for foreign travellers to experience a taste of the traditional arts. The Maiko's performance was amazing to see and she was accompanied by the Geiko on her Shamisen. Getting to meet and ask questions afterwards was a great insight to how the tradition is kept alive. The Maiko was very sweet and engaging and the Geiko was fun and friendly. They definitely seemed to appreciate my bad Japanese conversation! Getting to play a few rounds of games with them was an unexpected treat. The food was pleasent and offered a range of interesting flavours and tastes to try. We also made good use of the constant supply of alcohol! Overall I would definitely recommend this as an evenings activity.

Excellent Show and be prepared to eat A LOT.

This dinner was fantastic! I only had one 'con' so i'll get it out of the way first. We were at a corner table where we had our backs to the performance, so we had to turn around to see everything while trying to eat. OK now to the real review: FOOD: We were sat at tables with the appetizers packed in big red boxes. The servers took our beverage order, pick wisely, that's the option you get for the evening, unless you want to pay extra. When we opened the boxes, SO. MUCH. FOOD! There was a dough ball, vegetarian sushi, eel, fish, squid, shrimp, salmon, beef. That could have been the entire meal and I would have been satisfied. The next course was various tuna shashimi. The warm dish was snapper and shark fin sauce. This was a little 'gelatinous' for some not really a soup. If texture is a problem for you, you may not love this. The fried dish was tempura shrimp, mushrooms, and fish bone crackers. YUM! The final course was clear soup with fish, vegetables, and a side of mushroom rice. Dessert was a lemon sorbet. Most of us could barely get through the fried dish we were all so full! The PERFORMANCE: This was narrated in both Japanese and English. The Maiko came in and did 2 dances while the Geiko played and sung. Afterwards, they explained a little history of the Maiko and discussed the pieces of her wardrobe from her hair, jewelry to her kimono's various parts. After that was complete, the Maiko and Geiko came to each table to answer questions (with a translator). It was very nice to have personal time with them. Then came the drinking games. This was so much light hearted fun and everyone got involved..whether it was cheering for your table's participant, or all of the guests! There were 2 different games that were played and if you beat the Maiko, you got a small prize. We had a great time and I would definitely recommend going to this dinner.

Highlight of our trip. Fantastic to be able to speak with the Maiko and ask questions etc. Dinner was fabulous and important to be brave and try everything as you will be surprised how delicious everything is. I thought the drinking games may be tacky but they were very funny and delightful. It is not cheap but is worth it.

We loved this experience! The Maiko performed dances and played music and even played some drinking games. They taught us all about the history of the Geikos and how they differ from the Geishas. We also played some other games and they gave us prizes. The food was delicious too. Most of it is made with seafood, so make sure to ask for a special meal if you can't eat fish.

This event was so beautiful and authentically Japanese, that I could not believe that I was there. The maiko was funny, beautiful and skilled in entertaining a room full of people. This girl was truly on her way to becoming a geisha. The whole geisha district had a special mystic feel about it but to experience their old-world charm and skill was something beyond movies. The reality was far greater than any description in a book - you have to meet them and experience the night for yourself. Be adventurous and be immersed in the mysticism of ancient Japan with their music, costumes and grace.

This was an amazing experience for me and my 15 year old daughter. She was fascinated by one of the young geishas. The performances and games were entertaining and we spoke with one of the performers who gave us her backstory. The only change I would make is to have the host explain what we ate.

This was perhaps the most interesting tour we took the entire trip. Gave us a glimpse into the world of Geishas that we would have not been able to have otherwise. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend this dinner in Kyoto! The food was amazing and they let you select your all-you-can-drink beverage. They have both alcoholic and non alcoholic selections. I recommend the cold sake. The maiko performance and interaction with the guests was fun. Be prepared for drinking games!
