Designed to delight the active traveler, this rewarding 6-hour hike takes you to the top of the Cerro Chato Volcano in La Fortuna. Shrouded in rain forest rich in biological diversity, the dormant volcano offers a challenging yet exhilarating hiking experience: from the summit, located 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) above sea level, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the San Carlos lowlands and the distant Arenal Volcano National Park. Lunch and hotel pickup and drop-off in La Fortuna are included.
Kick off your hiking adventure with pickup at your La Fortuna accommodation at 7:30am, when you’ll board an air-conditioned vehicle destined for the start of the 1-mile (1.6-km) trek to the top of the Cerro Chato Volcano.
Having lain dormant for hundreds of years, the volcano has fostered rich biological diversity in the rain forest that smothers its slopes. Throughout your 3.5-hour hike, look out for howler and spider monkeys, white-nosed coati, boa constrictors, deer, sloths, and parrots — your experienced guide directs your attention to each of the species when they appear.
Then, at the 3,600-foot (1,100-meter)-high summit, you’ll be rewarded with views of the crater lake’s emerald water, and the distant San Jose lowlands and Arenal Volcano National Park.
Revitalize with lunch, make your descent, and then conclude your tour with drop-off at your La Fortuna hotel.
