This is a very well organized tour. It's for adrenaline junkies, mountain bikers, and really, anyone afraid of heights that wants to challenge themselves. I fall in the latter category. My husband, meanwhile, falls in the former. We lucked out with the weather and were treated to clear skies and breathtaking views -- in January, no less. Our guides were Robbie and William, and we couldn't have asked for anyone better. Our driver was Cumpa, and does he know how to drive!
From start to finish, the tour was wonderful. Robbie was excellent about allaying my fears of falling off the side of a cliff. They're total pros. On the downhill ride down the WMDR, you stop at 8-10 points along the road, where Robbie gives you a brief overview of what might be coming -- is there a wipeout corner, a waterfall, a stream? He tells you all about what to expect so that you can take it as safely as possible. The other great thing is that they don't rush you -- you can go at your own pace. There's always someone at the front of the group, and then a guide at the back of the group usually, unless they need to go up ahead to take pictures of the group. If there is no guide at the back, you can rest assured that the van is following and will come to your aid if something goes awry which nothing did!.
All in all, it was an amazing day and I was able to overcome my fears and feel a sense of accomplishment. Safety is Gravity's biggest concern and it's absolutely evident in the way their tours are organized. We would definitely do another trip with Robbie and crew again, the next time we visit Bolivia.
Awesome. The ride down was great. The van ride up after was truly terrifying. Robbie, the guide, was very professional and safety-minded. Also, he was very informative. When I go back to Bolivia, I will definitely do this again.
An awesome day with beautiful views over the incredible landscapes around death road. Gravity was a good and serious company with great equipment and the bikes was perfect for this roads. Good lunch at the end of the tour. The guide made us feel really safe. Definitely worth the extra bucks!
Excellent in every way. Amazing ride, amazing views, amazing guide Matt from Gravity. Everything
We had an amazing day with Gravity Assisted!! Steven, Cesar and Cameron were great! They made sure everyone was comfortable, equipped and having a good time. Lots of stops made for everyone to catch up and snacks too : Buffet at Senda Verde was just ok, could have had more variety and was a bit cold. I also would have enjoyed if the monkey tour would have been included in the visit instead of being additional, however I liked how we stopped here and could contribute to this non-profit organization.
Thanks to Ansel and Steven for the great time I had. I would do it again. Patricio Uribe
Wow what a thrill! There were about 12 of us in the group (this company doesn't go out in big groups) and two guides. We did some practice runs in a parking lot to get used to the bikes then hit the first paved downhill part. That was already the beginning of the adventure - you can go as fast as you want, really, with one guide in front and one guide at the back. You stop from time to time to take some breaks, take pictures, talk to guides etc. Then off to Death Road - the main part of the ride. SO much fun, again, stopping to take breaks every 15 - 20 minutes or so. But you can go at your pace, slow or fast (I wouldn't recommend going too fast!), which makes it fun since you don't have to wait around for the whole group. Definitely worth doing, highly recommend this company and an experience that is a must-do when in Bolivia!
This has been on my to do list for a few years now and I'm so happy I finally did it! Definitely book with Viator / Gravity since it's the safest option. Yes, there are other companies which are a bit cheaper, but you don't want to risk it. The bikes used are professional mountain bikes, they cost between $3,000 and $3,500 each and are maintained properly by a mechanic after each use! The ride itself was exhilarating. The road is a decent size (width), but it is still in use today, so be careful with cars, buses and trucks coming up at you! The guides were very professional, have years of experience and make sure that you have a good and safe ride to the bottom! You start out at about 15,500 feet above sea level and end at end at about 3,300 feet, so layers are a must! It's a bit chilly at the top and hot at the bottom, so always good to pack different clothes. The ride is 100% downhill, although there is an optional uphill section (which no one in our group did). Although downhill, some parts are a bit bumpy so tough on your hands and arms. Gloves are provided (and obligatory) but be prepared for a bit of muscle pain the next day! After we got down to the bottom, there is an optional zipline ride you can do (pay directly there), or you can just relax, enjoy some cold beers and a nice visit to La Senda Verde animal refuge. To head back to La Paz, the driver will either take the new (paved) road or back up Death Road. We went back up Death Road - it's even scarier doing it in the bus, at night and passing other vehicles! All in all, 5/5, awesome (and long!) day out, highly recommended and make sure you use this company - your safety is their top priority!

I had a great time on the Death Road Tour. I felt 100 safe at all times and the guides and driver were safe, helpful, and professional. The guides even took pictures and uploaded them to Google Drive after our tour. So don't bother bringing a camera unless it's small as plenty of pictures will be taken along the way. Also, be sure to bring a change of clothes. At the end of the tour, there are showers with hot water...yes!! and you'll definitely want to take advantage of them after cycling half of the day.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this review 5 stars is the following: When I originally booked my tour, the tour company, Gravity, offered hotel pickup. However, some time between my booking and my tour date, they changed their policy. AND they did not notify me that pickup was now in a central location. The location was convenient to my hotel, so no biggie. But, the fact that the company NEVER contacted me to let me know is a bit problematic. I found out that their policy had changed after I emailed them to confirm the time. Definitely not a professional way to do business.
Gravity really focuses on safety, our guide really knew his stuff so felt I was in safe hands. AlwAys a bonus to have someone with a sense of humour. Beautiful scenery, the bikes were highly reliable. It was daunting at first, but once you're on your way the thrill takes over.
If u enjoy mountain biking then this is the best tour. Excellent equipment! Scenery was out of this World! Wasn't able to take pictures while riding so the company took them but still waiting to get the link on DropBox to view them a long time. I'm not a mountain biker so a little scary
