What You Can Expect

Lapland Northern Lights Safari from Saariselkä including Igloo Visit

Go in search of the Northern Lights in Lapland

Put on warm winter layers, meet your guide at your central Saariselkä hotel, and travel into the snow-covered countryside by air-conditioned minibus.

Along the way, gaze out at the silhouetted fells and forests, and hear stories about the Northern Lights — otherwise called the Aurora Borealis — and the Lapland myths and folklore that have grown up around them.

Arrive at an igloo and kota camp on a hillside, and hear from your guide how the remote setting, far from the electric glow of towns and cities, boosts the chances of spotting the lights.

Go inside an igloo-theater and watch a fascinating multimedia presentation on the lights. Learn how the colorful ribbons of light are triggered by electrically charged particles, and admire images of some of the beautiful recent displays that have graced in Lapland’s skies.

Next, head outside to stroll around the woods and camp and watch for the lights. Get useful pointers from your guide, and with luck, be treated to a display. While sightings can’t be guaranteed, the low light pollution will heighten the chances of catching a show.

Afterward, defrost by the log fire in the kota, and savor tasty sausages and hot berry juice.

Then, when the time comes, return to Saariselkä, where your trip finishes at your hotel.

Please note: the order of activities above may change on the day of your tour depending on weather conditions and other seasonal factors.

A must when visiting Lapland but prepare your professional camera to view the amazing colors of northern lights. The kids had fun with igloo. We went in total darkness, we had to used the lights of our mobile phones and it was very cold. It would be better to wear the suits, gloves and warmers provided by the tours. The grilled sausage were great together with the hot berry juice.
