Black Canyon Kayak Day Trip from Las Vegas

Black Canyon Kayak Day Trip from Las Vegas

Take a break from the gambling and non-stop nightlife of Vegas to the spend a full day kayaking among the beautiful river canyons found not far from the city. It’s the perfect chance to see a different side of Las Vegas: one that trades neon lights for canyons and beautiful desert wildlife.

Start the day with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Las Vegas, continuing to the kayak center where you’ll meet your guide and get your necessary gear for the trip. Once you’re ready to go, jump in your transport and head to the base of Hoover Dam, walking 1,100 feet (335 meters) down to the kayak launching point. You’ll also clear a security checkpoint where you’ll be asked to show a government-issued photo ID.

Receive a short safety lesson and paddling tips from your guide before setting off. Then spend the next 4-5 hours enjoying your incredible kayaking adventure. The trip paddles through mostly calm water, though it can occasionally be bumpy depending on the weather. Rest assured that your boat is designed for maximum stability, includes safety gear and has rudders to assist with turning.

Soon after you set out, you’ll arrive at a great photo location with fantastic sight lines back to the Hoover Dam. Snap a few shots and then follow your guide towards the next landmark at Sauna Cave, where you can take two optional short hikes. The easy trails here trace their way through a slot canyon, leading to hot springs for swimming and relaxing. For those that skip the hike, take a break on the riverbank amidst the beautiful scenery until the group returns.

Continue seven more miles (11 kilometers) before taking a break for a picnic lunch situated on a secluded beach. Once you’ve fueled up, continue paddling three miles (5 kilometers) to your next sightseeing stop at Emerald Cave, along with a historic tramway and a station once used to measure the river’s flow rate. A nearby trailhead offers more hiking depending on your group’s progress.

Finish your trip at Willow Beach, where you’ll rendezvous with a van that will transport you back to Las Vegas. Bathrooms and refreshments are available at the beach’s marina. Bid farewell to your group and guide as you head back to your hotel, arriving in the early evening.

Please note: you must provide your exact name as it appears on your government-issued ID (passport or driver’s license) at the time of booking. The local operator will use this information to obtain the required permits. The tour cannot be confirmed without this detail.

Our kayaking tour was fabulous!! I would do this trip again in a heartbeat. I think what really made the trip was our guide, Gary. Lots of stories to share with us as well as knowledge about the wildlife and plants. Hiking into the canyon to relax in a hot spring pool was probably one of the highlights. Well worth the money!

This tour was fantastic. We went as a group of four, none of which had kayaked before but we all found the trip enjoyable and one of our best days in Vegas. Our guides Neil and Joe were really knowledgable and made sure we didn't miss a thing - we even stopped off on the way back to see mountain goats! I would definitely recommend that you do this trip, even if you've never been in a kayak before. You get to see some amazing things and it is a really fun day.

My favorite excursion of our trip. We had a great guide. We had only kayaked a couple of times in the past, but our guide had us cruising down the river in no time. The sights were incredible and the hike up to the hot springs should not be missed. A long day but so much fun. Would love to come back to do it again.

My brother and I did the 12 mile kayak from the base of the Hoover Dam with Reed as our guide. We went on the last day of a packed vacation and were super tired and a little unprepared no water shoes. Reed was extremely patient and accommodating. We had never kayaked before, so he taught us simple techniques and was very supportive. The hot springs and other hiking stops were great and Reed offered a good balance of commentary throughout. The lunch was really tasty. We were a tad sore at the end, but felt completely fine the next day we're mildly athletic. The view and overall experience was fantastic. The drivers were also personable. These guys obviously love their jobs and it makes the day better for everyone else. No complaints whatsoever.

Had an amazing day out. Very early start but great guide - very interesting and funny - and the scenery was amazing. We had never kayaked before but really enjoyed it, and the hiking part too - especially the hot springs. Would highly recommend this tour.
