What You Can Expect

Berlenga Grande Island Small-Group Day Trip from Lisbon

Kayak around the island

Meet your guide in Lisbon's Restauradores Square and depart for the charming fishing village of Peniche in a climate-controlled vehicle. On arrival, board a boat for the 40-minute crossing to Berlenga Grande, an island characterized by secluded caverns and twisting rock formations.

After your boat drops anchor at the island’s port, enjoy some free time to pick up refreshments or stretch your legs with a stroll on the beach. Then, board a smaller boat destined for St. John the Baptist Fort (Forte de São João Baptista), a 17th-century fortress built from the ruins of an old monastery.

Explore the stronghold with your guide and hear stories of invasions and pirate sieges. Then, uncover the island’s flora and fauna with a 1-hour walk through the Berlengas Nature Reserve (Reserva Natural das Berlengas).

Back at port, break for lunch at one of the seafront eateries (own expense) or, if you've brought food with you, have a picnic on the beach.

When the time comes, join back up with your group for the included cave kayaking excursion. Alternatively, if you’d prefer a less demanding activity, explore the caves in a glass-bottom boat.

After, travel back to Lisbon, where your tour concludes with drop-off at the starting point.

This tour was excellent! Mike was very informative. This was the first day of the season, so it was refreshing to see the guides interact so positively with the fishermen on Berlenga. The boat ride out was a little rough, due to weather, and a few people were seasick, so I might recommend taking something prior to the boat ride out. The return trip was much smoother. There is a fair bit of walking to get to the fort, so, in addition to bringing beach items for the afternoon, I would wear good walking shoes for that portion of the trip.

This tour was great. Our guide, Miguel, was good-natured, engaging, and informative. The views were breath-taking, as was the water temperature, and the kayaking was enjoyable even for a beginner. The boat ride to and from the island was fairly long and a bit chilly but worth it.

Beautiful destination but rough boat ride to get there. You should definitely take your motion sickness meds but you will enjoy the experience at Berlenga.

Be mindful of the almost an hour long choppy boat ride on way to the island. Other than that fantastic place.

So happy we found this day trip. We found this last minute in July and enjoyed it so much. Our guide Miguel was great. He was super friendly and knowledgeable. The pickup spot was easy to find, the drive to Berlenga was fast and smooth, and weather was good which made the boat ride was fairly smooth and speedy. The hike to the fort wasn't bad at all and enjoyed the learning the history of the island, fort and lighthouse. Definitely recommend kayaking. It was our first time kayaking and loved every minute of it. All in all we were happy with our decision to book this spontaneous day trip.
