What You Can Expect

Fátima, Batalha, Alcobaça, and Óbidos Full Day Private Tour from Lisbon

Batalha

Meet your guide at your Lisbon hotel, and learn about Portuguese history and faith as you travel north to Fátima, home to the Sanctuary of Fátima, a legendary pilgrimage site. Learn how three local shepherd children described the appearance of ‘a lady in white’ in 1917, then visit the basilica where the three children are buried.

Continue to the UNESCO-listed Batalha Monastery, a 14th-century Domincan convent built to commemorate a fierce battle between Portuguese and Castilan troops in 1385. Discover the rich details of the Gothic building, and trace the influence of local Manueline architecture through the site.

Stroll the picture-perfect center of Alcobaça, where historic neighborhoods and a quiet river wrap around the Alcobaça Monastery, another UNESCO site that’s among the most beautiful places in Portugal. Pay your respects to a pair of famous lovers buried in the monastery, and hear the tragic story of Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro, the queen who was crowned after death.

Make a final stop of the day at the walled city of Óbidos, and follow a maze of cobblestone streets to a historic castle, local shops and perfectly preserved homes; watch sunset from the pretty hilltown, then make the return trip to your Lisbon hotel. From March 28th to October 31st, this tour can accommodate a visit to the Fátima Candlelight Procession which takes place daily between 9:30pm and 11pm.

Very interesting and well organised tour. Our driver/guide was very informative and since we were a group of friends we had a certain flexibility regarding the order of sight we wanted to visit and time spent at each sight. Batalha and Alcobaça are beautiful monasteries and Óbidos is such a charming place to visit. All in all, a great experience!

It was a great experience and the only way to visit many places in one day.The organization was perfect.Bernard, the driver was at the hotel door at time and we traveled in complete safety in all the places. The car was a good one, clean and new and the driver very polite and helpfull.
We left on time and visited all the places planned. The driver didnt rush us and he recomanded all the time how long we would need in each place. In return he agreed to let us in Rossio Square and not at the hotel. It was a pleasant experience. We are very pleased with the organization of VIATOR and recommend this trip.It was easy to book and pay. Thank you VIATOR.

We were a group of 14 persons booked in 2 minivans. Our English tour guides were Eduardo and Bernardo. They were very friendly, knowledgeable, hard-working, polite, and patient. With their excellent guidance, the tour was very interesting and enjoyable from the beginning to the end. The lunch was very good with good foods, drinks, beer, wine, coffee included. Fatima is a very popular and famous place, but other places mentioned in the tour are also very interesting and amazing with knowledgeable guidance from our tour guides.

We had a wonderful, full day with our guide Joaquim, who picked us up at our hotel in Lisbon at 9am. We didn't return home until 8pm. That's two or three hours later than normal but Joaquim was a gracious, knowledgeable host who didn't rush us and tailored the tour according to our interests. Normally this tour stops at Fatima first, but Joaquim wisely recommended we tour Obidos first, a wonderful, medieval city with a picturesque stone wall surrounding it. After a long and interesting lunch we visited the Batalha Monastery, where we took our time seeing and learning as much as we could. It wasn't until late afternoon/early evening that we got to Fatima. But the timing was perfect the heat of the day was over and getting a feel for this special place seemed natural. There was a Mass going on in the main church when we arrived so we were unable at first to visit the tombs of the three children who witnessed the apparitions. But Joaquim gave us plenty of time to walk around and pray, and afterwards and after the Mass he said we should go back into the church and spend some time visiting the tombs two of the children are now saints in the Catholic church. This is a great tour and way to learn more about Portugal outside of the big cities regardless of your religious background or tendencies. Recommended.

He went out off his way to show us more and pleased us constantly. Fatima was just an awesome experience, and one of our members got to do the reading at mass made her day Will do it all over again.
