What You Can Expect

Lisbon City Sightseeing Tour

Belem Tower, Lisbon

After meeting your guide at your Lisbon hotel or in central Lisbon, hop aboard an air-conditioned coach for your 4-hour city sightseeing tour. Relax as you head to the Moorish influenced historic district of Alfama. Learn about this neighborhood is home to Fado, Portugal’s own musical genre. Wind around streets and pop into a local wine shop to sip Port (fortified wine), exclusively produced in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal.

Next, ride in your coach towards the coast of the Tagus River and pass the historic Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio), which was completely rebuilt after the devastating Lisbon Earthquake of 1755. From the beautiful waterfront see the beautiful Sé de Lisboa cathedral a 12th century church remodeled numerous times, but carrying Roman architectural roots.

Continue on to Belém, home to the 16th century UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery (own expense). Admire these prime examples of Portuguese Manueline art, as you traverse the edge of the Tagus. Lisbon sightseeing is at its best at the Monument to the Discoveries. Learn how this monument celebrates Vasco da Gama’s expedition to the Americas during Portugal’s Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Next, enjoy one of the finest collections of 17th century luxury coaches in the world at the Coach Museum. On Mondays, both the Coach Museum and Jerónimos Monastery are closed, so in turn visit the Casa-Museu Medeiros e Almeida showcasing a comprehensive art exhibit by Portuguese artist António de Medeiros e Almeida. Not in the mood for art? Instead indulge in pure opulence at the neoclassical Palácio Nacional da Ajuda (Ajuda Palace).

As you Lisbon sightseeing tour comes to a close, marvel at the 25th of April Bridge which suspends over the Tagus River, the longest of its kind in Europe. Notice its similarity to San Francisco’s Golden Gate. Then return to central Lisbon where your tour ends.

Great tour! We went to the palace instead of the cathedral since it was closed for the Monday. The palace was worth it. The guide made each spot very interesting with her many historical stories and legends.

Tour was good..a big problem was they combined the German Spanish and English tours. The woman took forever to explain everything to us and by the time she did so in every language the event or place had passed. The group was very large and in some places not all could fit to see. Take small tour.
