What You Can Expect

Sintra Day Trip from Lisbon

Cabo da Roca, Portugal

Leave Lisbon and relax in a comfortable coach as you head to Pena Palace (Palácio Nacional da Pena). Visit the Romantic-era fairy-tale-style castle, located almost 500 yards (500 meters) above sea level, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hear anecdotes about Portuguese royalty from your guide as you tour the castle and its gardens.

Continue to Sintra and have lunch at a local restaurant (if option selected). Then, enjoy free time to explore the village at your own pace, see the colorful houses, visit the Sintra National Palace, or simply relax by the waterfront.

Hop on a tram and admire views of the Portuguese countryside on the journey to the Colares, a small town known for the quality of its wine. Learn interesting facts about Portugal's wine industry from your guide as you wander around this charming town.

Continue your journey along the colorful Cascais Bay to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point in Europe. Stop at the dramatic Hell's Mouth cliff (Boca do Inferno), which offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Guincho Beach, famous among surfers for its strong winds and long-tail waves.

Resume the drive along the picturesque Estoril Coast and enjoy a panoramic views of the Casino Estoril, one of Europe's biggest casinos, believed to be where Ian Fleming (the author of the James Bond series) developed the idea for Casino Royale.

After your tour, admire the beautiful green colors of the Portuguese countryside on your way back to your Lisbon hotel.

Note: The tram journey is only available from April to October on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Outside those dates, enjoy a sightseeing tour by bus.

I never take tours but this time I took a risk and I was not disappointed at all. Guide provided explanations in different languages English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, food was good and in most of the places there was enough time to go around. Probably Cabo Roca would require additional 30 minutes to enjoy more the view and the place.

My wife and I were very satisfied with this all-day tour. Pickup from the hotel Sheraton Lisboa was prompt although the ultimate departure time was later than scheduled. The hotel pickup is just transportation to the bus station which is really just a collection of buses in a pleasant tree-lined street not far from the Sheraton. We did finally leave but there was an accident causing traffic backup so we were rather late arriving at the palace, obviously not the fault of the tour. This tour visited the main sites you want to see, Sintra, Pena Palace, Cascais, Cabo de Roca. The tour guide was quite good and did her best to accommodate everyone. We spent about 2 hours in the town of Sintra, which is where the included lunch is served. My wife and I chose not to do the included lunch and I was very happy for that! There are tons of little pastry shops and restaurants where you can get sandwiches and other food very reasonably, and spend more time exploring. The one complaint I have is that we didn't have time to explore the gardens around Pena Palace, which are supposed to be amazing. Other than that, highly recommended!

Note that this tour was provided by the Gray Line service which does a bunch of bus tours and hop-on/hop-off bus services. We used Gray Line for 2 hop-on/hop-off city tours where we just stayed on the bus for the full circuit and that worked well. However, I DO NOT recommend using hop-on/hop-off for the longer trips e.g. to Cascais. My poor wife waited an hour and 45 minutes for the bus to return on the Cascais line. The problem is that the hop-on/hop-off buses do not stick to a schedule so you have no idea when they are coming. However, they're fine if you stay on for the shorter circuits, and the guided day-trip not a hop-on/hop-off was great. I also highly recommend Uber, outstanding service in and around Lisbon all week.

This trip was very exhilarating. The places visitied - Sintra, Cascais and Cabo de Roco - were absolutely delightful. Our guide explained everything very clearly and patiently clarified questions asked. The places are absolutely picturesque!

We are glad we selected this extensive tour of Sintra and neighboring beach areas, including lunch. We booked it in advance from our computer in the U.S. and the contact information was all very clear and happened without any problems, with pick-up and drop-off at our hotel. We enjoyed the free time we had as well as the tour information from the guide. It was a day well-spent and a good value.

Pena palace is a must-do in Lisbon. Tour takes the hassle out the multiple forms of transport neccesaary to get there -and adds some other good sights. Would have liked more time at the palace and less on some of the other stops.
