Small-Group Tour: Knights Templar Historical Tour from Lisbon

After meeting your guide in central Lisbon, journey north in a cozy minivan to Almourol Castle one of Portugal’s most historical sites. Along the drive learn about the Knights Templar who used this castle to secure the boundary created by the Tagus River. Arrive at the river near the castle and enjoy a boat cruise to its gates. Then, wander through this medieval fortification and steep in its history.

Continue from here with a drive to the serene village of Constância. Hear about the renowned Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões, famous for his poem Os Lusíadas, who used to spend much of his time here. Alongside your guide, stroll through the illustrious Parque Constância, where the Knights Templar used to savor the natural atmosphere. After your walk, stop for a delectable bite of an almond and egg treat (included).

Next, head to the charming city of Tomar, home to some of Portugal’s most impressive monuments and buildings. Gain insight from your guide about how the Knights Templar used a religious code to form the city, like the four monuments stationed around the city to resemble a crucifix. In Tomar, see famed monuments such as the 12th century Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and visit the Castle of Tomar. Then, take a break for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). Afterward, venture to the Gothic-style Church of Santa Maria do Olival, a gorgeous 12th century church erected for the Knights Templar.

Following Tomar, step back into your minivan for your return trip to Lisbon.

We had a great time by travelling through time with our guide, who is a knowledgeable story-teller. The castles and the convent are awesome. We also enjoyed a delicious meal in a medieval restaurant at Tomar.

Thelma was a wealth of knowledge a moving history book. Those of you who like Dan Brown historical fiction novels like Angels and Demons will love hearing and seeing the real history. The convent in Tomar is breathtaking. It is quite an interesting drive to get to the location too.

While it was supposed to be 8 people, our small group turned out to be only 4 of us plus our guide. I belive her name was spelled Cellia. She was outstanding. In addition to the driving, she accompanied us to each site: Almoural Castle, the town of Tomar and the Monastery above the town where she gave us a full guided tour. She was so knowledegable and thorough in her eplanations! In the town she gave us an hour and a half, and directed us to several local restaurants and a beautiful park. It was really an outstanding day!

I thoroughly enjoyed my small-group tour of the Castle of Almourol and the city of Tomar. Our tour guide sadly I didn't get her name was brilliant, answered every question we asked, and expounded on the historical information and significance of everything we saw. She taught me a lot in such a short time. I was sad when the day came to an end. If you enjoy history, beautiful sites, and a smaller tour group, do this! It's a day well-spent.

This was the only small group tour that we attended in Lisbon as all of our other tours were very private but it is definitely one i highly recommend. the group was only 8 of us so it was indeed intimate and our guide did a terrific job answering questions, providing the history of our visits to historical sites and even took us to an amazing medieval restaurant. I really can't underscore the hospitality of the professional guides in Portugal and how much they try to accommodate you. I think it will be a long time before i return to northern europe given how impressed i was with this country. Just a great job all around. Portugal is a must see and a place most people outside of europe or brazil know too much about. We recommend highly.
