A must not miss tour of Downtyn Abbey. Just walking up the path to Castle and revisiting all the amazing scenes filmed here made my pulse rate increase.

The castle is not open year around, but we managed to book the last day of the 2017 season. Our guide was excellent and it was a fun and informative day. The church used for the series is located in Bampton and this tour included a stop there. While the castle does not provide completely free reign and I don't blame them, you get access to the main areas and many nooks and cranny's. Be sure and have tea when you visit!
It was the full UK experience with thick Scottish mist giving the Abbey a haunting appearance. Loved just standing here or there, inside and out, and remembering scenes from the show. When people arrived and the servants were all lined up by the door, Bates being made to fall face first into the gravel thanks to O'Brien's foot, Anna scurrying around to the back entrance upon returning from jail, Mary and Matthew dancing in the hall by the stairs. The memories just didn't stop. Everything seemed smaller than on camera which was very strange. It was evident that there was some camera trickery that went on because certain columns were not there that should have been, the dining room was not as long as it certainly seemed, hallways were not as long as they should have been, but that's the magic of film.
The tour was wonderful. We were allowed to just roam around on our own and take in what we wanted to see. There were areas, of course, where we were not able to go but we got to see all the main areas of the Abbey. We also saw the town that was used in the show and the memories flooded back around the church, post office, the little cottage hospital and the pub. I left that town wishing I lived there.
Well worth the money and time! I watch my DVDs now with an extra little thrill when I remember seeing the buildings in person and smile when I realize that this or that is the magic of the camera.
Entire tour was simply fantastic, all that we wanted! The only thing we might have added was having the music playing on the bus as we pulled up to the Abbey. All was timed well, we never felt rushed and then being given the book was an added bonus that we have enjoyed since we got home. Have recommended several times already. ME
Our guide was excellent! He really made the tour for us, very knowledge, courteous and funny. The highlight was the visit to the castle. It was a bit of a drive from the village to the castle, but we did get to see beautiful English countryside along the way. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is a Downton Abbey fan.
This is a fantastic day tour which is run professionally by a great driver and tour guide.
The tour guide was excellent. Wish we had some type of speaker system, to hear when we were on the streets touring the area -- sometimes it was difficult to hear.
Absolutely delightful! One of the highlights of our trip. Loved having tea at Highclere Castle as well!
It met our expectations easily. Tour guide was great,, The home was great, the estate grounds fantastic.
Go Go do it!!!!!!!! It was great.
Again, Viator needs to cut out an attraction. To short a time at Oxford.
David is a fantastic guide, who did the whole trip. Just loved it!
I absolutely loved the Downton Abbey and Oxford Tour from London including Highclere Castle. Worth every penny! Visiting Oxford and Brampton was great. Got to tour Christ Church and brought back many memories from the Harry Potter movies. Also met a local woman in Brampton who was an extra in Downton Abbey she gave us a quick tour of her garden and thatched roof home. That was also a bonus. Our tour guide, Lucy was excellent as she was knowledgeable and was funny as well. Our driver Hollio was very good as well. A day well spent!! Thank you.
We loved this tour! It was a highlight of our England trip. My daughter and I are huge Downton Abbey fans and this was my birthday gift to myself. My husband and two daughters, 12 and 19, joined me. The tour guide was very entertaining. He had a lot of fun gossip to share and was well informed about the show and shared many fun facts about the filming of the TV show and the upcoming movie. Seeing Highclere Castle was so much fun! The house and grounds are beautiful. It was fun to have tea and scones in the little cafe/garden area. Each participant receives a book written by The Countess of Carnarvon. It's a large, heavy book but a great souvenir gift! We had fun going through it and seeing what she had to say. You also spend some time in Bampton Village which in itself is a delight. The fun facts that the tour guide shares is a lot of fun and the old church is beautiful. Oxford was another highlight. Seeing the town and the University was awesome, we loved the history of Oxford. If your a Discovery of Witches fan,you get to see the outside of the Bodleian Llibrary. We highly recommend this tour! Well worth it.
This tour to Oxford and Downton Abbey was absolutely amazing! Walking around the colleges of Oxford, we were in awe of the architecture and cozy pubs. Visiting the village of Bampton where so many scenes from Downton Abbey were filmed was thrilling beyond words! To sit in the village church where we witnessed so many weddings from the series, and walk around the surrounding cemetery and grounds was so moving. We expected to see members of the Crawley family appear at any moment! All this built up to the ultimate experience -- visiting Highclere Castle. Walking up that lane and seeing the castle from the same perspective we saw it so many times in the series was breathtaking. Walking through the rooms with furniture so familiar to us, and down the majestic staircase truly was magical. This extraordinary tour was made even sweeter with the gift of a large coffeetable book on Highclere, written and signed by the Countess Carnarvon who so graciously shared her magnificent home with us. The touring bus, Premiere Tours, was a big part of this wonderful experience. Although the bus was quite cold, our guide, James, and our driver, Ricardo, were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They both added immeasurably to this once-in-a-lifetime experience. My son and I could not have been happier with this tour. It was a dream come true and worth every penny. We will never hesitate to book through Viator in the future!
A great tour for all Downton Abbey fans. Our first time to London and my wife really wanted to go on this tour. She really enjoyed herself and seeing all the places they filmed the series. After putting pictures on social media, our family and friends want to go and do the same tour. The check-in process is a little a chaotic the morning of the tour but to me that is the only not good part. They have no control over that portion of the tour. Our tour guide was great and knew Downton Abbey very well. She even provided a little history of the areas we were driving thorough on the bus on our way there. Highly recommend this tour.
David the tour guide was amazing...he made the tour!!! David effortlessly weaved British history, stories about the royals, geography, economics and governance into an amazing journey. Oxford, Bampton, and Highclere Castle locations did not disappoint, and the time spent at each location was right for this full day trip. The only area for work would be a little better control at Victoria Coach Station where getting in line was a bit of a challenge.
I bought the tickets for my friends who took this tour they said it was absolutely fantastic and was the highlight of their trip to London. She is a Downton Abbey nut, so she remembered scenes in all parts of the castle. I was very lucky to book this tour it was full for weeks and there must have been a cancellation that opened up the spots the day before. Be sure to book this tour many weeks in advance. Don't worry, it's worth it.
An unrelated suggestion: when searching for the best deals on flights to Europe, search every time on an incognito window, you will see better prices. They start tracking your searches and raising ticket prices. I followed this suggestion and it really made a difference.
We had a great time exploring Oxford and Highclere Castle with Viator. Carol was a terrific guide, providing interesting tidbits from the moment we left the coach station in London until we arrived back in the evening - something we really appreciated even as locals! The tour provides plenty of time to explore Oxford, Bampton and the grounds at Highclere. The coach was comfortable enough and our driver, Andre expertly navigated the winding narrow streets throughout our Cotswolds route. The only things I would change would be the pickup point - its a bit of a chaotic start, but I know the operators are working on this already and adding in some time for a proper meal. The portion inside Highclere is not guided, which is not something I was expecting. Since it's the main draw, it would be a great improvement to provide some context while inside the Castle. Otherwise, it was the perfect day! Highly recommend to Downton fans looking to get an up close glimpse at the location for the series.
The castle is absolutely amazing. Well worth the visit. As you see it in the mini series - Downton Abbey - is how the castle is.
Such grandeur and wealth displayed - you can just imagine what it would have been to live there.
All around totally awesome. I would have preferred another hour in OXford, and maybe a little less time in village.
Commentary on the bus was Great.
These were two places where we really enjoyed ourselves. We had a particularly knowledgeable guide, which gave lots of insight into both places. Especially enjoyed the history of Oxford, and the town of Brampton, which was used in the filming of Downton Abbey.
This was an excellent day with John, a well informed and interesting guide! Our visit to Oxford included a guided tour and then free time to explore the campus and town and eat lunch. It was fun to visit Bamford and see several Downton Abbey filming locations. We were able to go inside the church and visit the town museum. This stop was a great way to build the excitement for visiting Highclere Castle aka Downton Abbey! It was a rainy day, but that did not matter at all. There was plenty of time to walk through the castle and visit the Egyptian exhibit as well as explore the grounds and gardens. I very much enjoyed myself and highly recommend this tour!
This was a charming tour, especially for Downton fans! We stopped first in Oxford to take a look at the famed university and to give people a chance to stretch their legs, visit the necessary and grab a bite of lunch before heading out to the Downton sites. First stop was Brampton, the lovely little village that plays the part of the Abbey village in the series. The informative tour guide related how the community came to be chosen for the series, how the production crew dressed up the surroundings to fit the time period and other inside stories about the show. We were taken into the church where all the weddings take place, visited the library building that served as the hospital and saw the house that belonged to Isabel Crawley. From there we were off to Highclere. Our tickets allowed us to meander through the main level rooms so familiar to viewers as well as the upstairs bedrooms along the gallery. There were docents in each room to answer questions about the castle itself and the current occupants. Each guest on the tour also received a hardbound book authored by Lady Carnarvon about entertaining at Highclere. Just a great tour!
