What You Can Expect

England in One Day: Stonehenge, Bath, the Cotswolds and Stratford-upon-Avon Day Trip from London

Visit Shakespeare's birthplace, with Champagne and scones served in his picturesque garden in summer

Depart your central London meeting point by air-conditioned coach, and journey out into the leafy English countryside.

Make your first stop at UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stonehenge, one of the world’s best-known prehistoric monuments. Rising up from Salisbury Plain, this remarkable stone circle dates back some 4,500 years and is generally thought to have been a temple that marked the movements of the sun.

On arrival, head inside the site complex with its visitor center, collect an audio-guide, and visit the massive stone circle to experience its size and symmetry close up. Ponder the mysteries that surround the edifice, and learn the theories as to how the stones were transported and then raised here.

Next, continue to the delightful, UNESCO-protected spa city of Bath, famous for its elegant Georgian 18th-century architecture and connections with 18th- and 19th-century novelist Jane Austen. Explore the city center with your guide to admire the honey-stoned mansions, terraces and bridges, and enjoy a little free time to stroll around the cobbled streets at leisure.

Back aboard your coach, travel deep into the Cotswolds, a region of rolling hills, green pastures and stone-built villages that’s considered perhaps the loveliest in England. Soak up the gorgeous views of the lush fields honeycombed with dry stone walls, and pass through bustling market towns crowned by impressive churches.

Arrive in the charm-laden town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of England’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare, and home to the famous Royal Shakespeare Company. Take in the half-timbered houses and Avon River that winds through the town. Then, enjoy glass of Champagne and traditional English scones in the garden of Shakespeare's childhood home (or indoors in winter), and stretch your legs around Stratford’s quaint center. Please note: As of April 1, Shakespeare's birthplace will be replaced with a visit to Shakespeare's Schoolroom, including Champagne and scones, a tour, and a school lesson as it was back in Shakespeare's time.

When your visit to Stratford ends, return to your coach and drive back to London where your tour concludes.

Please note: on busy days, the order of the activities as shown above may be subject to change.

It is worth spending a full day covering 3 key major sites. I enjoyed very much in comfortable bus hearing a tour guide explanation. I rate it the best.

Alan Doyle set the table right from the get go. With a heavy weight line up of sites to visit: Stonehenge, Bath, passage through the Cotswold, and the Stratford-upon-the-Avon, he entertained us throughout the bus trip with humor, wit and charm. His patience and bonhomie merited applause from my wife and myself. High recommend the trip and the tour guide.

Steve Maynard was informative and delightful. We arrived at Stonehenge well ahead of the throngs of other tour buses and my only regret is that the Stratford portion of the tour does not include a visit to Shakespeare's grave. An incredible day and a wonderful way to see so much of the English countryside in only 12 hours.

This trip was taken by my sister and I. We were thrilled to be able to cover this area in a day. The host was informative and interesting and we were thrilled with each stop and even though it was a lot of ground to cover we felt we got a taste of each area and really loved the experience.

Very knowledgeable guide; he is an actual professional actor turned into a tour guide. He knew Shakespeare and recited his poems on the bus, simply amazing. It was a long day but the guide kept it entertaining and fun

This tour was wonderful, the guild and driver were also wonderful. the guild was so hopeful and we had so much time at only the places we went to. This tour is well worth doing, couldn't speak high enough of the day we had.

We’re very happy with this tour. It’s definitely a must for the people who loves history. We made this tour with two kids ages 8 and 5. The kids enjoyed every single part of it.

It was a long day but definitely worth it. We left early and got to Stonehenge while there were only a few visitors there by the time we got ready to leave the parking lot was full of tour buses. Got to Bath after a couple of hours and had an opportunity to visit The Baths and the Abbey. Both were beautiful and interesting. Drove through the Cotswolds which were so peaceful and lush and then on to Stratford to visit the school Shakespeare attended. We had scones and champagne after our lesson.: This was an abbreviated summary of the trip.
The important part, however, was the commentary by our guide Leon and the expert driving of B. You might think that an 11 hour excursion would be monotonous but with Leon's information, anecdotes and humor throughout the trip the time passed quickly. Leon knew so much about each location we toured but pointed out many many interesting buildings, areas, towns along the way. One thing that we enjoyed was the English basis for many common sayings that we use.
Would definitely recommend this tour--especially if you can get Leon and B.
