What You Can Expect

Oxford Rail Tour from London

See the Bridge of Sighs and other iconic sights on your Oxford walking tour

Your half-day tour of Oxford begins in the morning at London’s Paddington Station. Grab a comfortable seat aboard the train and take in the scenery as you course through the pastoral English countryside to the ‘City of Dreaming Spires.’ After an hour, disembark and set off on a guided walk through central Oxford.

Start by taking in the quiet beauty of this world-famous university town. Visit the Bridge of Sighs, Beaumont Place and the prestigious Trinity College. Duck into stately libraries and larger-than-life meeting halls, and hear fascinating stories about the University of Oxford and its distinguished alumni from Bill Clinton and Albert Einstein to Lewis Carroll and Oscar Wilde. Learn about the university’s 38 colleges and see famous filming locations for movies such as The Golden Compass and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Between stops, wander through tranquil courtyards and narrow cobbled passageways, and snap photos of the sweeping Oxford skyline, punctuated by hundreds of spires.

After touring the university, head to a British pub for some traditional refreshment. Sip on an award-winning ale (own expense) while your guide shares more facts about Oxford through the ages. Learn about the impact of Norman and Viking assaults, and how the city has fostered creative groups such as the ‘Inklings,’ a writing group whose members included J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis.

Your 3-hour walking tour ends back at the train station. Hop back on the train and enjoy a relaxing ride back to Paddinginton Station in London, arriving by early afternoon.

John was an excellent guide, lots of info and enthusiasm, and we enjoyed it very much. The tour description could use an update, as it appears the pub portion of the trip is no longer on the agenda. No big deal, just a point of refinement

This tour was pretty awesome and our guide Ali really knew his way around Oxford. While we got started a bit later than planned, it went off pretty well. After we got to Oxford, Ali walked us around for hours, stopping at places to point out certain buildings or other stuff. He was informative and funny. He also waited for the whole group to gather before he'd start, which was nice for the slowpokes.

Thanks Ali!

Our tour guide Angus was not only a font of knowledge about Oxford and all of England but entertaining as well. He kept things moving at a fast pace so we covered a lot of ground and history. It was a beautiful time of year to see the meadow, Christ Church and all the amazing spires. Great tour.
