Experience three of Austria’s UNESCO-listed highlights — Salzburg, the Wachau Valley and the Salzerkammergut — in one day on a trip from Vienna. Admire the wine country of Wachau and Salzkammergut’s mountains and lakes before arriving in Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace and the setting for ‘The Sound of Music.’ Tour Salzburg's must-sees, including Mozart's House and the Mirabell Gardens, and then stroll and relax independently. Hotel pickup and drop-off included.
  • Day trip to Salzburg from Vienna
  • Admire stunning UNESCO-listed scenery on a drive through Wachau and the Salzkammergut
  • View Salzburg’s must-sees including the Cathedral and Mozart’s House
  • See the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, the setting for 'Do-Re-Mi' in 'The Sound of Music'
  • Enjoy free time to shop, eat and stroll in Salzburg Old Town
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in central Vienna included
  • Travel by air-conditioned minivan or coach, with guided commentary
After early pickup from your central Vienna hotel, leave the Austrian capital and journey west toward Salzburg. Pass through the rolling hills and vineyards of UNESCO-listed Wachau along the River Danube — an area famous for the Benedictine monastery of Melk — and hear information about the region from your guide.
Stop for breakfast (own expense), and then continue into another UNESCO World Heritage gem: the Salzkammergut region of mountains and lakes that played a starring role in The Sound of Music. Admire the lakes and villages, and hear fascinating snippets about the area’s history before arriving in Salzburg at around noon.
Take a walking tour of the UNESCO-protected Old Town with your guide, seeing landmarks including the Cathedral, Mozarteum and St Peter’s Cemetery, whose colonnades famously provided hiding for the Von Trapp family in the 1960 musical.
Wander along the cobbled Getreidegasse shopping street, and learn about Salzburg’s most famous former resident, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as you pause outside the composer’s house.
See the Mirabell Palace and its gardens, the backdrop to the famous 'Do Re Mi' scene in The Sound of Music, and take in the views from here up to the Hohensalzburg, the hilltop fortress looming over the city.
After your roughly 1.5-hour tour, enjoy about two hours to explore independently. Perhaps delve into the cobbled alleyways to shop, enjoy a late lunch (own expense) or sightsee further, perhaps visiting Mozart’s House or St. Peter’s Abbey.
When it’s time, rejoin your guide and relax on your scenic ride back to Vienna. Your tour concludes with a drop-off at your central hotel in the evening.

A pleasant enjoyable day trip. Our tour guide Robert was very knowledgeable that was very well demonstrated during the day.

Salzburg is beautiful and worth the visit. Our guide picked us up and dropped us off at our door. He was very knowledgeable and fun! On the way up we also stopped at a fabulous rest area that served fresh baked everything! I would recommend this tour!

The ride was smooth and we saw great areas. What a beautiful city and town old and new. We had enough time on our own, I recommend this tour. Worth the money.

Our Viator tour guide Robert was informative but talks a bit fast and seemed like he was rushing all the time. We were picked up at our hotel @ 7am. We stopped by a store/restaurant for 1/2 hr. Arrived Salzburg @ 12 pm. From the bus drop off we started the walking tour to Old Town. We were not given a restroom break during the walking tour so some had to find a restroom and fell behind on the tour. There were no headphones or whispers provided so that we can hear the guide clearly. Was hoping that the bus ride would have been more interesting, like they should have played "Sound of Music" songs or something. We walked for about 1 or so and then was given time to eat lunch and re-group @ 3:45 to go back to Vienna.

Salzburg is a must visit place. It is full natural beauty. This place has a history. Lot of places of attraction. Mozart's birth place, museum, funicolor.

Hotel pickup and small group (8 people) were much appreciated. Informative (if occasionally inaccurate, factually) tour with plenty of time to explore on your own. Both Old and New Town Salzburg are beautiful and well worth the visit.

This was a really good tour. The van was comfortable except for a passenger who kept singing in his native language. Because it was snowing pretty hard, we weren't able to go on the scheduled walk however, we bought some umbrellas at a gift shop and did our own walk with the assistance of our smartphone GPS. Found all the places the tour was going to show us plus a wonderful restaurant for lunch. Salzburg is a beautiful town.

Spent wonderful day seeing the Austrian countryside and watching the landscape change from lower elevations to the mountains near Salzburg. Really enjoyed driving through the Lake District on the way to Salzburg. In Salzburg, the walking tour emphasized all the main attractions in the old town, and we were given ample time to wander the streets independently before meeting at a central point for the return trip to Vienna. Had time to see several churches and the hillside crypt, the main squares and gardens, Mozart's birthplace, have lunch in a local restaurant and browse a few shops. Was a long and very rewarding day, but now want to return to Salzburg for a longer visit. If you have just one day from Vienna to visit Salzburg, it is well worth it.
