Overview

See the heart of Austria’s wine region on a private day trip to the Wachau Valley from Vienna. Led by an expert guide, visit a traditional wine tavern to sip and swirl local blends. Then head to the medieval town of Dürnstein to taste local chocolates, schnapps and more. For summer travelers, you’ll also enjoy a cruise to Melk along the Danube River, while winter trips include a leisurely lunch at the wine tavern. Before returning to Vienna, top off your day at Melk Abbey to admire the town’s historic Benedictine Monastery.
  • Full-day Wachau Valley day trip from Vienna with a private guide
  • Visit a heurigen for a wine tasting and sip on fragrant Wachau Valley wines
  • Sample locally produced schnapps, jam, chutney and chocolate in the medieval town of Dürnstein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Enjoy a 1-hour Danube River cruise along the most scenic stretch of the river from Spitz to Melk (summer months only)
  • Explore Melk's Benedictine monastery -- Melk Abbey
Begin your private day trip with pickup from your Vienna hotel. Hop aboard your luxury minivan and journey west toward the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beloved for its scenic countryside, castles and monasteries, the region is also renowned for its wine.
Stop first at a local heurigen, a traditional wine tavern, and taste up to five prominent wines. Learn about the characteristics of each from your guide as you sample rich reds and aromatic whites.
Afterward, travel to the UNESCO-listed town of Dürnstein to try local specialties like chocolate, chutneys, jam and schnapps, while learning about the ingredients of each. Then enjoy some free time before reuniting with your guide for lunch (own expense) or a visit to another wine tavern.
Venture next to the beautiful village of Weissenkirchen, named after its white church. Enjoy another wine tasting at a heurigen, and soak up the surrounding vineyards and hills.
Continue to Spitz for a 1-hour cruise along the blue waters of the Danube to Melk (May to October only), passing vineyards, medieval castles and monasteries. For winter travelers, sit back and relax with an included lunch at the wine tavern, instead.
Upon arriving in Melk, take some free time to wander around Melk Abbey, the unique Benedictine monastery perched above the town. Your private day trip will conclude with transportation back to Vienna.

Fantastic tour led by James. Wachau Valley should not be missed! James was extremely knowledgeable and pointed out points of interest along the one hour drive to and from the Valley. We plan to do this tour again on our return visit to Vienna. He also did a great job with the wine tasting and ordering lunch consisting of local products. Just a great day!

The tour was great. However it was extremely expensive because it was a private tour for my husband and me. It was my mistake, which I realized a couple of days before the tour, and it was too late to add other guests to bring down the price. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful day. Jonas was a very nice guide. Knowledgeable and patient, he made sure we got everything we were looking for. We enjoyed seeing the terraced slopes of the Wachau Valley. We had a good tasting at Domaine Wachau. Then, we went to a very pleasant wine garden where we had lunch and tasted tasted a few more local wines. Then a 1-hr boat trip up the river and finally a self-guided tour through the
lovely Melk Abby. Thanks again to Jonas for a very fine experience.

Stelios picked us up at our hotel promptly at 10 and off we went to spend a FABULOUS day exploring the wine valley and Melk Abbey. Our first stop at a small winery was delightful. The first winery offered some delicious wines and fortified wines that were yummy. We then went to lunch at a charming restaurant, sitting outside in a beautiful green space. Lunch was reasonably priced and delicious. We then went to a another winery where we tasted yet again. Again, good wines. We then took a Danube cruise to reach the Melk Abbey. The abbey is beautiful. Stelios gave us the right balance of talk and silence and we were very comfortable with him. He also knows his wines and paid attention to our tastes as we tasted. Overall, this tour was awesome!
