Visit Lake Lucerne and Mt. Pilatus on a half-day tour by boat, cogwheel railway, and gondola. After an hour-long cruise around the lake, you’ll ride up the steepest — and most scenic — cogwheel railway lines in Europe. Stop at the peak of Mt. Pilatus where alpine vistas await. Your tour finishes outside Lucerne, but it’s a short and easy journey back to the city via public bus.
Make your way to the Lucerne train station at 8:30am. The station overlooks the pier, so start by boarding your boat for your 1-hour cruise around Lake Lucerne.
Disembark at Alpnachstad, and head inside a welcoming chalet-style restaurant with a terrace. Use your time here to eat and drink at your own expense, then make your way to the cogwheel railway for a ride up the mountainside.
The steep line is known as a scenic route; cast your gaze out of the window as you pass alongside mountain streams and pastures sprinkled with alpine flowers on your way to the peak of Mt. Pilatus.
When you reach its 6,995-foot (2,132-meter) summit, you’ll have some free time to soak up the views from the gallery, terrace, or restaurant. If you’re feeling more energetic, then take a short stroll to a nearby peak.
Descend back down the mountain via the Dragon Ride cable car, and hop out at Fräkmüntegg to enjoy a range of mountain activities. Test your agility climbing our rope park and get your adrenaline pumping (own expense), or treat the kids to a panoramic cable car ride to the children’s playground at Krienseregg.
From Krienseregg, you’ll continue by gondola to Kriens, then take the public bus No.1 from Zentrum Pilatus to the Lucerne train station.
Please note: The order of this tour is flexible, and can be adapted if you wish. See the Itinerary for another suggested timetable.
What a fun loop that brings you to Mt. Pilatus! You get to see beautiful Swiss scenery on the boat ride. The cog railway is a fun way up to the peak. Great views from the top and several restaurants to choose from. The tram brings you about half way down and offers amazing scenery. You can do a mountain coaster at this point if you like. After that you switch to smaller gondolas that glide just above tree tops. The last leg is catching the bus back to Lucerne. This was the only negative-there is not clear signage where to get the bus. No obvious bus stop. Thats not the tours fault. Just might need to flag down bus. Swiss Alps do not disappoint!!!
This is not to be missed...boat ride, cogwheel train going straight up a mountain dropping you at the most magnificent views of the Alps. Traditional Alpenhorn players, plenty of food and viewing options followed by 2 different gondola/cable car decents to a bus that will take you back where you started! You go at your own pace which allows you to do everything you might want to do. We loved the entire day!
A must to trip. The lake cruise was beautiful. The cog rail train to the top was a thrilling ride over amazing landscape. The time at the top of Mount Pilatus was incredible and the view constantly changing as a clouds would roll over the mountain side. The Gondola ride down was breathtaking. One of my all time favorite tours and a must do!!!
The lake cruise, railway and cable car/gondola combination was a wonderful way to spend the day. The weather was great at the top of Mt Pilatus and I enjoyed every minute of this experience. It was fantastic. Highly recommended.
A total all-round experience. We would highly recommend this trip to everyone who is contemplating visiting Lucerne.....this is a must.
MUST DO! MUST SEE! What an amazing experience!
I would say if you are in the Lucerne area you should take a day to do this trip. Instead, I would say that if you're visiting Switzerland at all you should plan this into your itinerary. There are plenty of reviews and photos posted online for you to read- all I would add is that it's difficult to describe how much better the tour is than most people's ability to express it, including me. It is spectacular!
